Six Fight City Muay Thai and Fitness athletes will vie for glory at the TBA Classic Muay Thai World Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Tyler Kerr, Jay Astwood, Keron Lee, Jarryd Simmons, Phill Beach and his daughter Emily Beach headed to Des Moines yesterday [June 17], where they will compete from tomorrow until Sunday.
Kerr, who won the featherweight B class title last year, has stepped up to the A class and will be confident of success after spending the past six months honing his skills in Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.
He also fought twice as a professional, winning both bouts, the first on points and second by stoppage.
Chuck Morgan, the Fight City coach, who has travelled with the team, told Bernews: “Tyler has returned from his trip with a wealth of knowledge.
“I’m very confident he’s going to perform well. You never know who you might run into and there will be some high level amateur and pros in the elite class.”
Morgan also has high hopes for Astwood, fighting for the final time in the B class, and hopes Keron Lee can turn the silver medal he won last year in the Senior B class into gold.
Father and daughter Phill and Emily Beach will compete for the first time at the tournament.
“Jay is in a very competitive bracket,” he said. “I’ve no doubt he will perform well and show all the skills he has in the ring.”
Morgan added: “This is the fifth time we have sent athletes to the TBA Classic, and we’ve always brought a title home. Hopefully, we can continue that trend.”
