Premier & Minister of Finance David Burt said, “Good Afternoon to Minister Owen Darrell, Minister Tinee Furbert, MP Jamahl Simmons, Somerset Cricket Club President Richard Scott, and members of the media:
“As we near the Cup Match holiday, I am here to reaffirm the Government’s dedication to supporting Bermuda’s cherished tradition.
“This year, as we gather as one community, we’ll celebrate our rich history, reflect on the emancipation of our ancestors on Emancipation Day, and enjoy the unique joy that Cup Match brings.
“The Annual Cup Match Classic between Somerset and St. George’s will again excite cricket fans at the historic Somerset Cricket Club.
“We are pleased to present the Government’s continued financial commitment through a $50,000 cheque to Somerset Cricket Club to assist with the expenses for this event.
“Our collaborative efforts also include safety checks of the scaffolding on the cricket field, ensuring that players and spectators can enjoy the match safely.
“I wish to express my appreciation to the executives, coaches, players, staff, and volunteers of both St. George’s and Somerset Cricket Clubs. The months of preparation and sheer dedication you offer are critical to making Cup Match a success.
“Remembering our history, we honor the legacy of historic figures like Mary Prince, commemorated on Mary Prince Day as we recognize the contributions of our Black Lodges and Friendly Societies, who organized this event to mark the end of slavery in Bermuda.
“A holiday that was not given, but taken by those who came before us who said that they would commemorate that day.
“The Annual Cup Match Classic is a testament to the strength of our community, the richness of our culture, and the pride we take in our people. It’s not just a cricket match; it’s a celebration of emancipation, a time when we come together as Bermudians to appreciate our heritage through sport.
“We must also acknowledge the challenges we face, particularly the recent increase in violence in our community. As we celebrate this significant event, let us also pledge to work together to foster peace and unity.
“I call on every Bermudian to take an active role in creating a safer, more harmonious Bermuda. Whether it’s through community engagement, supporting local initiatives, or simply looking out for one another, each of us must do our part.
“Let us honor the legacy of our ancestors not just through celebration, but through our actions.
“Let us be vigilant, supportive, and committed to breaking the cycle of violence. Together, we can build a future where every Bermudian feels safe and valued.
“Wishing both clubs a fantastic match ahead and a safe, enjoyable Cup Match holiday for all.
“Thank you.“
