Bermuda swimmer Jack Harvey says he is “happy to be an Olympian” after winning his heat in the men’s 100 metres backstroke at the Aquatics Centre at the Paris Games today [July 28].
Harvey, competing in a group of six, led from start to finish, posting a time of 55.78sec to leave him in 39th place overall.
“It was a tough race, a fight from the start, and I didn’t have too many people to race. That affects [the times],” Harvey told Bernews.
“I’m happy to be an Olympian – that’s cool.”
The 21-year-old said it was a special feeling competing on the biggest stage in front of about 5,000 spectators at the Aquatics Centre.
“The crowd were really into it, which was great,” he said.
“You always want to make the next stage and move forward [to the semi-finals], and now I’ll look towards the next [Olympics].”
He added: “The Olympics has been awesome. It means everything to us as athletes. I’ve had a lot of fun, met some cool people, and done some cool things. The experience has been great.”
Harvey will now switch to supporting his older sister Emma Harvey, who competes in the women’s 100 metres backstroke tomorrow at 6.21 am [Bermuda time].
“My family, friends, and Emma were here today supporting me,” he said.
“I’ll be here tomorrow to support Emma. She’s been racing well and I’m sure she can put together a good race.”
