Remember When: Flora Duffy Claimed Gold
[Written by Stephen Wright]
It has been exactly three years since Dame Flora Duffy became the island’s first athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
She claimed victory in the women’s triathlon at the rescheduled Tokyo Games on July 27, 2021, to become only the second Bermudian to medal at the Olympics after boxer Clarence Hill won bronze at the Montreal Games in 1976.
Duffy was part of a group of seven who broke clear at the start of the 40km bike but the seized control of the race with a superb display over the 10km run to finish in 1hr 55min 36sec.
Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown overcame a flat tyre near the end of the bike leg to chase back strongly and finish second, 74 seconds behind Duffy.
American Katie Zaferes rounded out the podium.
Duffy will defend her title at the Pont Alexandre III on July 31 [Wednesday].
