UWC Celebrates Achievements Of Four Scholars
United World College [UWC] Bermuda announced a special reception to honor four outstanding scholars – Fergus O’Connell, Taylor Herzog, Juliette Smatt, and Gianna Pedro – who have been selected to attend prestigious UWC schools around the world.
A spokesperson said, “The event will be held at the Bermuda National Trust Museum of Verdmont on Tuesday, July 9th at 6 PM. This reception is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of these exceptional students and to learn more about the unique educational opportunities offered by the UWC movement. The four scholars being honored are:
Fergus O’Connell
- Current School: Saltus Grammar School
- UWC School: Maastricht, Netherlands
Taylor Herzog
- Current School: Somersfield Academy
- UWC School: Costa Rica
Juliette Smatt

- UWC School: Costa Rica
Gianna Pedro

“The UWC movement was conceived in the 1950s during the height of the Cold War, based on the idea that students aged 16-18 would be grounded in their culture, but impressionable enough to learn from each other. UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
“At present, 1500 students from over 120 countries attend 18 UWCs worldwide. UWC locations include Armenia, Costa Rica, China, Swaziland, Norway, India, the Netherlands, Wales and Canada.
“All UWCs combine a rigorous International Baccalaureate academic program with significant community service and cultural exchange requirements.
“UWC Bermuda are incredibly proud of these four students and their achievements. Each of them embodies the values and spirit of the UWC movement, and we are excited to see the impact they will make on the world.
