18 PanAm Countries Win Medals At Olympics

The PanAm member countries won a total of 221 medals at the 2024 Olympics, with the organization noting that “the Americas achieved an important record with 18 countries in the medal count ranking.”

A spokesperson said, “The XXXIII edition of the Olympic Games in Paris, France have concluded. And, as usual, it is time for the results, conclusions, and analyzing how the countries and continents have progressed compared to prior years.

“Even though there are several things to consider when deciding the success, or not, of an Olympic cycle, medals are always an important factor to measure the work and efforts of the Olympic Committees and continental organizations.

“And it is in this point where Paris 2024 has represented a complete success for the Panam Sports member countries. The numbers reflect the great development of our continent, in terms of medals obtained, and countries ranked in the medal count ranking.

“In London 2012, the Americas achieved a total of 200 Olympic medals, in Rio 2016 it was 210; in Tokyo 2020, the total medal count was 211, and now in Paris, these prior numbers were surpassed, with a total of 221 medals.

“The Americas achieved an important record with 18 countries in the medal count ranking, in a never-before-seen situation. United States, Canada, Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Saint Lucia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Dominica, Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Grenada, Puerto Rico, and Peru won medals in these Olympic Games.

“United States once again showed its supremacy as a world power. They had a close struggle with China until the last day, but in the end they took the top spot of the Paris 2024 medal count ranking with a total of 126 medals: 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze.

“In the “continental medal count”, Canada was next with a total of 27 medals [9-7-11,] and then Brazil with 20 Olympic medals [3-7-10.]

“The Paris Games have also represented a mark in history for some delegations. Two countries won medals for the first time in an Olympic event. Dominica, with Thea LaFond and her gold in triple jump, and Saint Lucia with Julien Alfred, and her gold in 100 m dash and silver in 200 m dash in Athletics. Both wrote their names in gold letters in this edition.

“Guatemala also reached glory in these Games. Adriana Ruano became the first athlete from the country to win an Olympic gold in Shooting. In addition, Jean Pierre Brol got the bronze in Trap, in a historical participation of the country.

“Chile had the first woman in the country’s history to win a gold medal with Francisca Crovetto. In wrestling, Yasmani Acosta won the silver, breaking a sixteen-year streak of no medals for the Chileans in the Olympic Games.

“The Dominican Republic also made history in Paris 2024. Not only for winning a total of 3 Olympic medals, but also because Marileyidy Paulino became the first woman from that country to win a gold medal and with an Olympic record in the 400-meter dash.

“Peru on their part with Stefano Peschiera, won an Olympic medal after 32 years, with the bronze in Sailing, in the Dinghy specialty. The last Peruvian medal was in Barcelona 1992.

“For the President of Panam Sports the results of Paris 2024 is extremely positive.”

“We are very happy with the great work and effort of our athletes from the Americas. The results show that the continent is growing and has achieved important feats in the Olympic Games. United States with an impressive performance, taking the top spot of the medal count; and others such as Saint Lucia, Dominica, and Guatemala that have won their first medals in an Olympic event, we realize that we are making progress in the sports development in our region,” said the President of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic.

“I am so proud of our member countries, and I want to congratulate the athletes, coaches, and all the Olympic Committees of Panam Sports, who have done an amazing work, and it shows in the results and the progress done in terms of sports,” concluded the maximum authority of sports in the Americas, Neven Ilic.

The spokesperson said, “The curtain closes in Paris 2024 with the Americas strengthened, setting records, winning a large number of medals that surpassed greatly the prior editions of the Olympic Games, and establishing one of the most successful participations in the history of the Olympics for our continent.”
