Land Evans Re-Publishes Hervey Allen’s Poem

August 6, 2024 | 0 Comments

Jonathan Land Evans has re-published “a long and lovely Bermuda poem by the noted American novelist and poet Hervey Allen, in which he recounted the interesting, moving, and sometimes dramatic life of a black Bermudian woman whom he came to know and admire towards the end of her life, during his long sojourn in Bermuda in the late-1920s and early-1930s, and on whom he bestowed the pseudonym Sarah Simon [her actual identity is a mystery].”

He said, “‘Sarah Simon’ was published in a small edition in New York in 1929, and a few copies can be found on the rare book market, but the poem can now be conveniently enjoyed, for a modest price, in a scholarly new edition that includes helpful annotations and an introductory essay. The 98-page hardback [which also features an attractive pictorial cover reproducing a 1920s Bermuda painting in my collection] costs $12.02 at full price, and a 15% discount is available this week until the end of Friday using discount code WRITERBIZ15 at check-out. The discount code also applies to other of my books in the Lulu.com bookstore, including my award-winning ‘Bermuda in Painted Representation’ art history reference book, my ‘Collected Essays on Bermuda’s History’, my series of books on Bermuda’s modern history ['An Introduction to Bermuda's Modern History', 'Empire & Onion-Patch', 'Peace, Prudence & Prosperity', 'A Colony at War', 'Seasons of Change' and 'Siren Songs'], as well as my recent short-story collections such as ‘Collected Stories’, ‘More Tales & Trifles’ and ‘The Lordly Wadson Collection’; also my re-printing from a few years ago of a rare 1890 Bermuda novel by Isobel Henderson Floyd called ‘Stolen America’, which is an enjoyable book set amongst visitors to the island staying at the Princess Hotel in the late 1880s.”
