Video: Bermuda In Paralympic Opening Ceremony

Jessica Lewis and Yushae DeSilva-Andrade represented Bermuda with pride at the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in Paris today [August 28].

The groundbreaking event was held outside the confines of a traditional stadium on the iconic Place de la Concorde and Champs-Elysees, featuring more than 4,000 athletes from 168 delegations.

Lewis, the island’s most decorated para-athlete, carried the Bermuda flag in what will be her fourth appearance at the Paralympics.

The ceremony started along the Champs-Elysses, with Lewis and DeSilva-Andrade joined in the Athletes’ Parade by Lorri Lewis, the Bermuda.chef de misson and Jessica’s mother, and boccia coaches Troy Farnsworth and Larry Hunt.

Dressed in traditional blazers and Bermuda shorts, the island’s team smiled and waved at the thousands of spectators who lined the streets of the French capital to cheer on the Paralympians.

DeSilva-Andrade, competing in her second Games, starts her boccia campaign tomorrow in the women’s BC1 division at the South Paris Arena.

Lewis will compete in the T53 100 and 400 metres finals next Wednesday and Thursday at the Stade de France.
