[Updated] “Officers observed two males riding a motorcycle in a southerly direction along Khyber Pass, when the passenger discharged a firearm at police” and “officers began pursuit which eventually lead to shots being fired,” the police said today.

A police spokesperson said, “Shortly after 12am on Saturday 24th of August 2024 police were responding to an incident in the vicinity of Khyber Pass, Warwick.

“As the officers approached the junction with Quarry Lane, the officers observed two males riding a motorcycle in a southerly direction along Khyber Pass, when the passenger discharged a firearm at police.

“Officers began pursuit which eventually lead to shots being fired. The suspects made good their escape.

“Officers are presently searching the area for suspects as well as forensically processing the scene.

“The length of Khyber Pass has been closed until police release the scene.

“Witnesses are being asked to contact Detective Chief Inspector Derricka Burns on 2471062 or 7170921.

Update 10.19am: Shadow Minister for National Security Ben Smith said, “While I am thankful no one was hurt in last night’s gun incident, I am shocked to learn that perpetrators were brazen enough to shoot at the Police. Sadly, this reckless behaviour demonstrates a new level of low among these criminals that I didn’t think was possible after the incidences we have endured over the past few weeks.

“But one thing is certain—sooner or later their luck will run out.

“Residents of Bermuda, I implore you to have the courage to come forward if you know who is committing gun crimes.

“These perpetrators will brag to someone that they got away after shooting at the police. If you hear it you need to tell someone. This callous level of crime will lead to innocent bystanders and our hard working police officers being harmed. These cowards must be stopped.

“It takes a village and Bermuda needs to return to the community it once was.”
