The PLP’s “candidate selection process is a crucial and democratic step” and “this process has officially begun, in close partnership with the Branch Executive of Constituency 36,” PLP Chairperson Dawn Simmons said.

Ms Simmons stated, “On behalf of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party [PLP], I would like to address the recent media queries regarding the announcement of our candidate for the upcoming October By-Election in Constituency 36.

“The Party’s candidate selection process is a crucial and democratic step that we undertake with the utmost seriousness and integrity. I am pleased to confirm that this process has officially begun, in close partnership with the Branch Executive of Constituency 36.

“As a party, we are committed to ensuring that our candidate not only represents the values and aspirations of the PLP but also resonates with the concerns and hopes of the residents of Constituency 36. The Branch Executive plays an essential role in this process, providing valuable insight and guidance that significantly influences the candidate selection. We will make an announcement of our new candidate at the appropriate time.”

The By-Election for Constituency 36 Sandys North – which was called due to the resignation of PLP MP Kathy Lightbourne-Simmons — will be held on October 4th. Since the one seat system started in 2003, the PLP have won Constituency 36 Sandys North in all 5 General Elections. In the 2020 General Election, Ms Lightbourne-Simmons won the seat with 59.04% of the vote, the FDM’s Marc Bean was second with 25.34% of the vote and the OBA’s Jeff Sousa was third with 15.62% of the vote.

The One Bermuda Alliance previously announced that Carl Neblett is the approved candidate for Constituency 36, Sandy’s North, and they confirmed this week that he will stand in the by-election.

Shouldn’t it be the other way around? First making sure the candidate will represent the interest of the people they’re seeking to represent. The party first focus is what’s crippling our island. #VoteIndependent
