Patience Lowe Helping Olympians Stay Sharp

Bermudian lead physiotherapist Patience Lowe is among those playing a key role in ensuring the island’s athletes at the Olympic Games in Paris remain in peak physical condition.
Lowe has been busily working with each of the eight athletes – seven based in Paris and one in Marseille [sailor Adriana Penruddocke] – with her role involving injury prevention, injury treatment, and recovery and maintenance.
She said it has been a privilege to be helping the elite athletes compete at the biggest stage of their sports.
“It’s my first time involved with the team,” Lowe told Bernews. “I’ve wanted to give back to the community for some years. To be accepted for this role at the Olympics has been amazing.”
When asked to describe her average day with the Bermuda team, Lowe said: “I’ll check on the athletes to ensure they have everything they need before training. After training, I’ll ask whether they need a flush, a stretch, or a warm down.”
A former Pacers Bermuda Track Club and Flyers Track Club athlete, Lowe trained as a physio in Sheffield, England, and has worked as a performance physio in London since 2012.
“I’m a bit older than these athletes in Paris, but I remember competing against some of them in the Iron Kids Triathlon many years ago!” she said.
“I’ve been living in London for a while, working with athletes and performers on West End shows such as Moulin Rouge and Matilda, so I’m used to working with professionals day in, day out.”
Lowe, a trained sports scientist, said she would jump at the opportunity to help Bermuda athletes at future competitions.
“Hopefully, this is just the beginning,” she added. “I’d love to be involved in future events. If I’m needed, I’ll be there.
“I’m very grateful to be here. It’s been a rewarding experience.”
