Tropical Storm Ernesto is a “threat to Bermuda”, the Bermuda Weather Service said, with its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hours forecast to be 42 nm to the SW at 6am on Sat, Aug 17th, with the BWS noting that “this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track.”

“The latest forecast from the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “At 500 AM AST [0900 UTC], the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was located near latitude 19.5 North, longitude 66.6 West. Ernesto is moving toward the northwest near 16 mph [26 km/h]. A turn toward the north-northwest and north with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected tonight and Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Ernesto will pass to the north of Puerto Rico through today. Ernesto should then move over the western Atlantic later in the week and be nearing Bermuda on Saturday.

The BWS forecast discussion states, “A steady increase in winds occur, beginning Thursday evening as Ernesto commands all local conditions. Sea states deteriorate with building SE swells and during Friday seas rapidly build to become very rough, creating dangerous surf and rip currents. As of the 6am NHC Advisory and BWS TUB, the onset of Tropical Storm force winds begin early Friday afternoon within our local marine area, then on land a couple of hours later.

“The 50 knot threshold is expected to affect the marine area later Friday evening. This effectively brings the onset of tropical/hurricane force winds forward by around 6hrs from the previous advisory. BWS advises the public to continue to monitor updates on Ernesto, before, during and after the impacts affect our region.

“A Tropical Storm Watch/Warning is likely and may be combined with a Hurricane Watch. There is also the possibility of superseding those with a Hurricane Warning depending on the timing of the onset of associated wind thresholds. “

It must be nice. I do.

I keep hoping that Ernesto will swing to our east before Friday night.
