Kayuri Tucker has reflected on the special memory of scoring his first international goal for the Bermuda Under-14 national team at the recent Caribbean Football Union Under-14 Challenge Series qualifiers in Trinidad and Tobago.

The elegant defender, who played an instrumental role in helping Bermuda advance to the final of the tournament, was one of the scorers in their 10-1 victory over Sint Maarten.

That moment, when the ball hit the back of the net, marked a dream come true for the talented youngster.

“It was an amazing experience to represent my country and score an international goal,” Tucker told Bernews.

“I was so happy to score against Sint Maarten and make my family proud.”

Football runs deep in Tucker’s family.

His father, Kamen Tucker, is a former national team defender who played locally for Dandy Town and Southampton Rangers, passing down a love for the game and an understanding of what it takes to succeed.

“I’d like to thank my dad for helping me along my football journey – he’s been there for me since day one,” Tucker said.

“He gives me advice after my games. He helps me a lot because he played the same position.”

The 14-year-old, who attends Sexey’s School in Somerset, England, said he credits not just his father but also several influential coaches who have honed his skills over the years.

“I’ve come a long way since joining the [Bermuda Football Association] National Academy,” he said.

“The coaches [Vashun Blanchette and Robert Butterfield] have helped transform me into a better player.

“They have been amazing for the [under-14] players. I think this team can achieve a lot together.

“I started playing when I was three at BAA and then moved to Dandy Town’s youth programme. Coach Jonathan Eve at Town has also helped me.”

As for his ultimate ambition in the game, the former Bermuda Institute student added: “I’d love to turn professional one day – that’s always been my dream.”
