Zydon Lightbourne Furbert, the Bermuda Under-14 national team winger, showcased his exceptional eye for goal during the recent Caribbean Football Union [CFU] Under-14 Challenge Series qualifiers in Trinidad and Tobago.

Lightbourne Furbert played a pivotal role in helping his team finish runners-up in the regional tournament, narrowly losing to Barbados on penalties after a series of impressive performances.

The 14-year-old, also an accomplished sprinter with the Bermuda Pacers Track Club, said he gained confidence from his goal-scoring exploits during first international competition.

His standout moments included a hat-trick in Bermuda’s 10-1 victory over Sint Maarten, a brace in a 5-0 triumph against Bonaire, and a goal in their 4-0 win over Grenada.

“It was an amazing experience, and I was proud to represent my country,” Lightbourne Furbert told Bernews.

“Playing alongside my friends in another country was amazing. Scoring six goals in the tournament has boosted my confidence.

“We were disappointed we didn’t win [the tournament], but we were pleased and proud of our accomplishments. We know this team is capable of even more.”

The Warwick Academy student is a product of the Somerset Trojans youth set-up and is gearing up for the upcoming Bermuda Football Association Appleby Youth Leagues season for the West Enders.

He credits much of his development to Vashun Blanchette, head coach of Bermuda’s Under-14 team, who has been a guiding influence throughout his young career, having coached him from the under-7 to under-14 level.

“Vashun Blanchette has really helped improve my game,” said Lightbourne Furbert, whose grandfather Stephen Furbert played for Somerset Eagles.

“My speed is one of my biggest assets; I like to get down the line and cross the ball. I’m also a good link-up player.

“Hopefully, I can have trials at overseas teams and turn professional eventually.”
