Video Discussion: PLP Wins C36 By-Election
[Updating] The by-election for Constituency 36 Sandys North is being held today [Oct 4], and we are thrilled to have some of the island’s brilliant young minds from Bermuda Youth Connect hosting a live discussion in advance of the results, and we will also be streaming the announcement live from the polling station.
There are four candidates in this by-election — which was called due to the resignation of the PLP’s Kathy Lightbourne-Simmons — with the FDM’s Marc Bean, the OBA’s Carl Neblett, the PLP’s Reverend Dr. Emily Gail Dill and Independent Cire Bean all set to contest the election.
Since the one seat system started in 2003, the PLP have won Constituency 36 Sandys North in all 5 General Elections. In the 2020 General Election, Ms Lightbourne-Simmons won the seat with 59.04% of the vote, the FDM’s Marc Bean was second with 25.34% of the vote and the OBA’s Jeff Sousa was third with 15.62% of the vote. The 2012 general election saw the closest the seat has ever been, with the PLP winning with just 50.51% of the vote against an OBA candidate.
The past results all reflect general elections, whereas this is a by-election and the first time since the one seat system was in place that the constituents have the ability to choose between four different candidates representing three different political parties and one independent.
Many political watchers will be keenly interested in the results of this by-election, not just who wins it, but the overall vote count and placements of all the candidates.
We don’t know exactly what time the results will come in, but in by-elections they generally are not announced before 9pm, but it always varies; the live stream panel discussions is set to start at 8:30pm, and we plan to cut to the polling station once they are ready to announce the results, whatever time that may be.
This is excellent. Much appreciated.
If Marc Bean leader of the FDM losses tonight he should just join the OBA and be leader. I’m sure he would do a better job than the present leader who has zero experience when speaking with the black population.
Zero experience speaking to the black population? Smh what’s the difference between speaking to the white population and the black population?
That reminded me of a very funny scene fromo the movie ‘Airplane’ ..
‘Jive’ ?
The amount of racist dog whistles included in the speech?
Ebonics?
Vitriol?
I’d be curious to know as well.
Stop talking BS.
Was excellent and the young people she questioned held their own and did a great job. They should organize ONE or more activities and show us in action what they said in words about working together. They will learn a great deal in the real life venture. The PLP youth member is ready to run for a seat. He was very mature and knowledgeable.
Stop using multiple names pretending you are multiple things,
Should be a wake up call to the PLP, but unlikely. A very low turnout and a big drop in support for the PLP. Unfortunately because of the way seats are won, the PLP will brag about their “victory” but more people voted against them than for them.
RIP OBA now go back in the nasty coffin. 30-6
You’re the problem with this country. Hope you leave soon. You’re government is running its own people out of here but I’m sure you’ll still believe in them when you’re on the dole in Manchester while they sit in their comfortable mansions chuckling over how they swindled you and you voted for them. Well done.
Mark.
Every person is entitled to his or her oppinion.
You can please some of the people some of the time but it is imposable to please all the people all the time.
Please do not pretend to be me when spewing your vitriol
So other than childish whining you have nothing. Got it.
It’s pretty obvious PLP is losing support and it’s good to see the independent’s and FDM’s numbers clearly showing Bermudians want change and hopefully we will see more of the same for the upcoming general election .
This country is doomed. How in the world do people still vote for the PLP? It’s baffling.
They vote for skin colour, nothing else.
Aparently there is no need to waste valuable time on berating the Government as they are more than capable of doing that to them selves and to their supporters.
The barage of atacks launched against one another and also by and at a disatified public bear no satisfactory results being far too numerous on ocasion and some what or fruit less .
Exercising an attempt to gain political gain or power appears not to be acceptable to the job at hand.
May I ask this question, what are they celebrating?
We have many unresolvable social issues criminal and other wise which in the long run will destroy Bermuda’s credible reputation.
Presently Inflation sits on the top self requiring immediate attention if not sooner .
