BCA Celebrates Students Chess Success

The Bermuda Chess Association [BCA] is celebrating Bermuda High School [BHS] students Kaelyn Fleming and Dimitri Gontcharov for their achievements at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Chess Association is proud to highlight the outstanding accomplishments of two talented students from Bermuda High School for Girls, Kaelyn Fleming and Dimitri Gontcharov, who represented Bermuda at the prestigious 45th Chess Olympiad, recently held in Budapest, Hungary.

“Kaelyn Fleming made her debut on the international chess stage as a member of Bermuda’s Women’s Chess Team, competing in 9 out of the 11 rounds. She achieved impressive victories against opponents from Tanzania and San Marino, as well as a hard-fought draw against Guyana. Kaelyn’s performance earned her a FIDE rating of 1491, a remarkable milestone for her first international tournament.

“Beyond her strong play, Kaelyn’s amazing personality and positive attitude made a real difference for the team, contributing to a great sense of camaraderie. She is also the Head Girl at BHS and an active member of the school’s chess club, where her leadership inspires her peers.

Dimitri Gontcharov Chess Bermuda October 2024

“Dimitri Gontcharov, a student enrolled in the A-Level program at BHS, played for the Bermuda Open Chess Team. Competing in 9 rounds, Dimitri scored 5.5 points—the highest score for the team—securing the prestigious Candidate Master [CM] title, and making him the youngest titled player in Bermuda. He claimed victories against players from the British Virgin Islands, Gabon, Laos, Cambodia, and Eswatini, along with a well-earned draw against a strong opponent from the Isle of Man.

“As the reigning Bermuda Under-18 Chess Champion, Dimitri is a seasoned competitor, with this being his third Olympiad. Additionally, he runs a chess club at BHS, where he mentors both senior and younger players, further nurturing Bermuda’s chess talent.
