Since 2017, ILS Bermuda has partnered with the Bermuda College as part of an education initiative which provides educational and work experience opportunities for College students, expanding their awareness and knowledge of the Insurance Linked Securities [ILS] and re/insurance sector with the ultimate aim of forging network connections that enhance their potential to enter this critical sector of the Bermuda jobs market.

A spokesperson said, “Over the years, ILS Bermuda’s education initiative has broadened to a more comprehensive offering to include a funding partnership for paid summer internship opportunities with industry organizations exclusively for Bermuda College students where students can learn “hands-on” gaining valuable work experience.

“In 2024, there were five organizations in the ILS and re/insurance space that participated including: The Bermuda Monetary Authority, Marsh Management Services [Bermuda], Hiscox ILS, Integral ILS and Price Forbes. We are extremely pleased to announce today that these five organizations have confirmed their partnership commitment to the ILS Bermuda’s Internship Program for summer 2025.

“In order to ensure that students receive well-rounded exposure and knowledge of the various segments of the ILS and re/insurance industry as well as essential skills for all employment opportunities, the education program consists of several modules that occur throughout the academic year.”

Key elements of the full-year program include:

  • Attendance at the ILS Convergence conference at the Hamilton Princess between October 7th to 9th, where students enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about ILS and re/insurance by attending panel sessions and through support from ILS Bermuda’s education committee members for guidance and answers to their questions. Students were also encouraged to participate in social and networking events with conference attendees and ILS Bermuda education committee members.
  • The popular Lunch and Learn modules were conducted for the first time in 2023. The module was conceived from questions posed about various roles within ILS and re/insurance organizations by those Bermuda College students attending the prior year’s ILS Convergence conference. In this module individual students volunteer and directly arrange sessions with industry participants while being supported behind the scenes by the ILS Bermuda education committee members.
  • This year, a revamped one-on-one mentorship initiative has been launched. Mentors will work individually with students to augment the knowledge imparted in practical group seminars in areas such as resumé and LinkedIn profile development, scholarship and internship application strategy and interview practice. In addition, mentors are there to help students with general career developmental questions, honing their career focus and to help make suitable university selection choices as well as helping them develop broader skills required to transition to successful workplace participants.

LaVonne Smith, ILS Bermuda Education Vice-Chair and Senior Vice President, Resolute Global Partners stated, “ILS and re/insurance is a dynamic industry in Bermuda and we are committed to catalyzing Bermuda College students chances of future employment opportunities by both providing a program structure that provides relevant skills and education on topics needed to transition successfully to industry, as well as creating invaluable network connections for students through the mentorship, Lunch and Learn and internship modules of the program. We are delighted at the calibre of organizations reconfirming their internship partnership with us this year. They share their faith in our program and its aims and by partnering with us, provide what students have said is the most important pilar of our program – summer internships. I’d also like to thank all of our mentors, particularly those new this year, who are extremely busy professionals who humble us with their commitment to mentor our students.”

Dr. Ali Arouzi, Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, Bermuda College stated that “the Bermuda College is extremely grateful to the opportunities that ILS Bermuda College Education Initiative has offered our students. Since its inception in 2017, Bermuda College students have benefited from pairing with industry mentors and have secured several internships. The Lunch and Learn sessions have proven to be a valuable instrument in helping students focus on their career interests.”

Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive with one student stating, “The ILS Bermuda College Program completely changed my life. By participating in the program, I was able to learn extensively about the reinsurance industry, network with professionals, and secure two summer internships. The experiences I gained were invaluable and culminated in me receiving two scholarships that have entirely funded the remainder of my university education overseas. I would highly recommend the ILS Bermuda College Program to anyone that is considering joining.”

ILS Bermuda Chair Jo Stanton said, “An important part of our mission at ILS Bermuda is to encourage, support and mentor young Bermudians who are interested in this industry. We had an excellent group of students participate in our various education initiatives this year and we look forward to them continuing and completing their studies and joining Bermuda’s risk industry in the near future. On behalf of the entire ILS Bermuda team, I would like thank all the students for their enthusiasm and participation in our education initiatives this year. I would also like to thank those organizations who have recommitted as partners to provide this academic year’s students internship opportunities for summer 2025.”
