MP Kim Swan Attends Vasco Anniversary
Junior Minister Kim Swan accepted an invitation from the Executive Board of the Vasco da Gama Club to attend a cocktail reception in celebration of the Club’s anniversary.
A spokesperson said, “On Saturday October 12th, 2024 Junior Minister Kim Swan accepted the invitation of the Executive Board of Vasco da Gama Club to participate in a cocktail reception commemorating the Club’s Anniversary.
“Representing the Minister Senator Owen Darrell – MP Kim Swan, Junior Minister of Tourism, Culture & Sport expressed his delight to be on hand to support Vasco da Gama celebrate during its 89 Anniversary in Bermuda.
“The Junior Minister provided a historic account of his connection with the Portuguese Community growing up in Southampton knowing the Hon. Ralph Owen Marshall who was Bermuda’s first Portuguese Member of Parliament [1963] and later Cabinet Minister.
“Junior Minister Kim Swan also shared the historic connection in golf between British Open Golf Champion Tony Lema, Bermuda and the Azores. Tony Lema who became the 1964 British Open Champion, was the son of a Bermudian father of Azorean descent. Tony Lema would further inspire Bermudians playing in the Shells Wonderful World of Golf at Mid Ocean Club in the 1960’s, which aired on TV shortly before his tragic death during to the airplane crash.
“Sharing his personal connection with the Portuguese community growing up in Southampton, MP Kim Swan who participated on the PGA European Tour and won three Bermuda Open Championships [1978, 83 & 84], revealed that he played his first game of golf due to Emery Madeiros Jr. [from and accomplished sporting family of athletes of Portuguese descent] when they took Kim’s mother’s mobylette and rode to Princess Golf Club [where Emery’s family where a member to play golf]. The rest is history.
“The Junior Minister thanked outgoing President Ambrosio for his service, congratulated the Vasco da Gama Club for its community efforts and encouraged other organizations to follow its example celebrating its rich history and contribution to the community.”
