Bermuda Under-14 player Rufaro Kunze says he has learned valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability from competing in the Caribbean Football Union [CFU] Under-14 Challenge Series Qualifier in Trinidad and Tobago.

The 14-year-old played an integral role in helping his team advance to the final of the regional tournament in August, losing 4-3 on penalties against Barbados.

Kunze made his mark during the competition by scoring in a 10-1 group stage victory over Sint Maarten.

Reflecting on the team’s unity, he shared, “The team really bonded together in Trinidad.

“We were in the hotel most of the time resting before training and playing games. There wasn’t time for anything else.”

He noted his progress on the field as well, saying: “At first, I wasn’t getting many minutes, but then I started to play and did well and earned more minutes, which I was happy about.”

A PHC Zebras Under-15 player, Kunze was born in England to a Bermudian mother and a Zimbabwean father, moving to Bermuda at age five.

He started with the Somerset Trojan junior programme before joining PHC, where he has honed his skills under the guidance of coach Robert Bean.

“My coaches at PHC and Bermuda have really helped me,” Kunze said. “Coach Robert Bean has coached me at PHC Zebras and the national team and has been a role model.”

Kunze, who plays as a left-winger and attacking midfielder, describes himself as a “skillful player” who enjoys dribbling but recognises the areas he still needs to work on.

“I need to improve my defence and my passing,” he admitted.

Looking ahead, Kunze has set ambitious goals. “I want to play up a few age groups at PHC,” the Warwick Academy student said.

“I’d also love to play for the Bermuda senior national team one day and play overseas.

He expressed his gratitude for the support he has received along the way, adding: “I’d like to thank my whole family for supporting me throughout my journey.”
