The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] is currently conducting a two-week training course focused on asset confiscation and financial crime investigation.

A police spokesperson said, “In keeping with ongoing efforts to enhance its capabilities, The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] is currently conducting a two week training course focusing on asset confiscation and financial crime investigation.

“The course which began on Monday, November 4th and concludes on the Friday, November 15th, is being facilitated by Jason Aldridge and Ian Ball, of the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency.

“It was organised by the BPS and is being conducted at its Prospect Headquarters, with officers from the following units involved:

  • Financial Crime Unit
  • Drugs Unit
  • Criminal Investigation Unit
  • Anti-corruption Unit
  • Technology Department
  • Community Policing Division”

Acting Detective Superintendent, Jason Smith, of the Serious Crime Division stated, “This opportunity will result in our officers becoming more adept at investigating the activity of those engaging in financial activity for furtherance of criminal enterprise. This is imperative as the BPS plays a major role in protecting Bermuda’s reputation as a well-respected, financial jurisdiction.”

Mr. Smith added, “Bringing the facilitators to Bermuda has allowed for a much larger officer cohort to benefit from this initiative. This has resulted in significant cost savings, but more importantly, has widened the pool from which to draw as we work to address the aspect of criminal activity.”

In the UK police numbers are around 0.2% of population.

In Bermuda it is 0.6% and has been as high as 1%.

We don’t need more police officers.

Exactly. This is especially true when, in most crimes, the police ask the public for assistance to solve a crime!!! Millions of dollars in a CCTV network get us what exactly? The failure of BPS management to maximize all personnel to deter crime proactively is apparent.

And yet there are no police officers on traffic patrol. Once again I have had to take evasive action at a traffic light in town because some entitled person decided that traffic lights do not apply to him. I am only glad there were no pedestrians crossing the street at the time.

“And yet there are no police officers on traffic patrol.” Why is that? Are they on CCTV duty watching TV cameras? Or watching sports on those monitors?

“asset confiscation” is doublespeak for we will take something of value from you, keep it indefinitely, and if you want it back, go get a court order. If we honor the court order, there is no guarantee we will find your something in the Evidence Room, that it is intact, and that count of say a coin collection matches what we took. You will not be reimbursed your legal fees to get your something back.

Since you make more money than we do, there is a suspicion of a financial crime somewhere.
