Bermuda Philharmonic Society Fall Concerts
The Bermuda Philharmonic Society will present their Fall Concerts on November 23rd at 7:30pm and November 24th at 4:00pm at St. John’s Church in Pembroke.
A spokesperson said, “When composer Peter Maxwell Davies attended his first Scottish wedding on the island of Hoy, it left such an impression on him he decided to write a piece about it. An Orkney Wedding and Sunrise tells the tale of a traditional Scottish wedding–complete with rainstorms, dancing, bagpipes, horses, and an increasingly inebriated wedding band.
“The Bermuda Philharmonic will be bringing this theatrical and entertaining piece of music to life, as well as other pieces that celebrate Scotland– Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, his “Scottish Symphony” and traditional Scottish songs based on poems by Robert Burns. The soloists for the evening are Glaswegian vocalist Kirsten Z. Cairns, and local guitarist [and beloved Scot] Stephen Crawford playing the Vivaldi Concerto for lute and strings.
Bermuda Philharmonic Society President, and conductor of this weekend’s concerts, Kate Kayaian, is thrilled to be collaborating with the island’s Caledonian Society for this concert. “There is such a vibrant Scottish community here on the island. We share a deep love of music and the arts, as well as a desire to support the next generation. We’re so pleased that we are able to dedicate a portion of the weekend’s ticket proceeds to go towards the Caledonian Society’s Scholarship fund.”
A spokesperson added, “In that vein of supporting the next generation, the Philharmonic has invited the following talented students and scholarship award recipients to Join the ranks of the Philharmonic for this concert: Ruth, Bella Correia, Edward Wyer, Dylan Jeffrey [violins], Prince Domingo [viola], Gabrielle Henderson [French horn], and Abigail Champs [flute]. These outstanding students are given the chance to perform alongside professional players, giving them the experience of a lifetime.
“We are grateful to our brilliant collaborators as well as our private and corporate sponsors such as Bermuda Air—helping to bring in our overseas musicians to the island.”
