Minister Darrell Joins Tribute To Eddie Ming

Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport Owen Darrell, joined the community on Saturday evening to pay tribute to one of Bermuda’s greatest musicians and educators, Professor Eddie Ming, at the Drum School’s Vegan Jazz & Percussion Gathering.

A Government spokesperson said, “The event, hosted at Professor Ming’s renowned Drum School in St. Georges, showcased the extraordinary talents of Gene ‘Stacker’ Joell and the Drum School’s Ensemble ‘Mañana,’ highlighting the impact of Eddie Ming’s lifelong dedication to music, mentorship, and wellness.

“It is an honour to celebrate a Bermudian who has given so much to our island, not only through his music but through his vision of a community strengthened by discipline, creativity, and a commitment to healthier lifestyles,” said Minister Darrell.

“Eddie Ming has transformed his love for percussion into a legacy, inspiring countless young people to find purpose, discipline, and joy through music.”

The spokesperson said, “With a career spanning decades, Professor Ming has created a space at the Drum School where students of all ages are welcomed and encouraged to connect with music and learn life lessons beyond the drums.

“Ming’s Rhythm Lab has served as both a sanctuary and a classroom, where Eddie teaches not only the art of drumming but also promotes a vegan lifestyle and the value of discipline. His mission is to pass on his legacy to the next generation, and his dream is to see one of his students take over his studio, carrying forward his vision for years to come.

“In recognition of Professor Ming’s contribution to Bermuda’s cultural heritage, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport proudly awarded a grant of $2,500 to support the Drum School’s continued impact on the community.”

“Professor Ming’s work embodies the spirit of Bermuda’s cultural richness,” said Minister Darrell. “We are grateful for the positive influence he has on our youth and for the way he has used rhythm to create a profound sense of belonging, growth, and hope.”
