Rafael Campos Claims Championship Title
Puerto Rican Rafael Campos has described this week as “the best of his life” after claiming the Butterfield Bermuda Championship title at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton today [November 17].
The 36-year-old shot a final round 68 to finish on 19 under to win his first PGA Tour event and secure the $1.242 million prize money for the winner.
“After such a bad year, to have things kind of go my way, everything together at once, I’m just so happy,” Campos told golf.com.
“I just can’t believe this is actually happening to me after such a year. I’m just grateful to be able to call myself a PGA Tour champion. It’s something I’ve dreamed about all my life.”
Campos, who also picked up 500 valuable FedEx Cup points and earns a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and an invitation to The Masters, started the day tied for the lead with American Andrew Novak after both fired nine-under 62s in the third round.
Novak came second after finishing on 17 under, with Adrien Dumont de Chassart and Mark Hubbard tied for third on 15 under.
“It’s been such a bad year ball-striking wise,” Campos added. “This game is so hard when things aren’t going well. It’s so hard to be confident.
“Things have just been so different this week. I’m just so grateful to finish on top of the leaderboard.
“It’s been an unbelievable week. Best week of my life.”
