Smith & Brown Earn Graduation Certificates
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice Kim Wilkerson recently attended a graduation ceremony at Westgate Correctional Facility to honour Shae-Unni Smith and Tyshaun Brown, who have successfully earned their High School Equivalency certificates.
A Government spokesperson said, “The achievement marks a milestone in their journey toward personal transformation and reintegration into society.”
Minister Wilkerson praised the graduates for their dedication and resilience. “Your accomplishments today are a testament to your intelligence and courage, commitment, and strength,” she said
“This achievement is no small feat—it’s a powerful step toward a brighter, more fulfilling future for everyone in your life.”
She highlighted the importance of education in rehabilitation efforts. “With determination and hard work, you’ve shown that education is for you and is an important part of your journey of self-discovery and self-growth.
“You are proving to yourself and the world that you are capable, resilient, and determined,” the Minister added.
A spokesperson said, “Shae-Unni Smith began his studies with the Department of Corrections in July of last year through the Penn Foster programme, transferring credits from his time at the Berkeley Institute. He completed 49 lessons, dedicating 12-14 hours of study each week. Despite facing challenges, Shae-Unni persevered until the very end.
“Tyshaun Brown participated in the GED programme, tackling Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies exams. Averaging 12-14 hours of study each week, Tyshaun passed each exam on his first attempt. He was a consistent student and emerged as a leader among his peers by encouraging others and recruiting new students.”
Minister Wilkerson reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to rehabilitation and reintegration. “The Department of Corrections believes in a mission to protect the public and offer rehabilitative services to those in its care. And we see that mission alive today through each of you, who have taken that mission to heart,” she stated.
She emphasised that facilitating programmes like these are integral to this mission. “You have taken a decisive step in shaping a future full of hope and possibility. Continue believing in your potential and using the tools you’ve earned here to build a positive, productive life,” the Minister encouraged.
Keeva Joell-Benjamin, the Commissioner of Corrections, added: “We are immensely proud of Shae-Unni Smith and Tyshaun Brown for their dedication and hard work.
“Their achievements highlight the positive impact of our educational programmes and the commitment of our staff to support rehabilitation efforts.”
