Bermuda HRC Observes Human Rights Day
The Bermuda Human Rights Commission will observe Human Rights Day on December 10, reaffirming its commitment to promoting and protecting rights under the Human Rights Act, 1981.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Human Rights Commission [Commission] is pleased to join the global community in observing Human Rights Day on Tuesday, December 10, reaffirming its commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights under the Human Rights Act, 1981.”
Lisa Reed, Executive Officer of the Human Rights Commission, stated, “The Human Rights Commission’s mission is to promote and protect human rights through education, collaboration, advocacy and enforcement. This annual day of recognition provides an important opportunity to reflect on our obligations, and our shared responsibility to ensure human rights are respected, protected and extended to all.
“Human rights belong to every person and upholding these rights is integral to creating a society where dignity, equality and fairness are prioritized.”
Ms. Reed continued, “Human rights recognize the inherent value of each person, regardless of background, appearance or beliefs. By defending human rights, we protect individuals, prevent harm and build stronger, more equitable communities.”
The spokesperson said, “Ms. Reed outlined the core principles of human rights:
- recognition and respect for the dignity and worth of all individuals;
- legal guidelines and obligations that promote equality and ensure adequate standards of living;
- standards to identify and measure equality, access, and fairness;
- the foundational rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
Ms. Reed concluded, “The Human Rights Commission urges individuals, organizations, schools, and unions in Bermuda to continue advocating for the rights of all individuals.
