“Over the past six years, the IAPP Bermuda KnowledgeNet Chapter has held a number of online networking and educational sessions for local privacy professionals looking to navigate the data protection landscape.

“On 15 – 20 October 2023, the IAPP Bermuda KnowledgeNet Chapter delivered its inaugural in-person event during the week of the 45th Global Privacy Assembly hosted in Bermuda. Local representatives from the Government of Bermuda and the private sector joined with international regulators and IAPP Co-Chairs from other jurisdictions to discuss critical global privacy issues and hear from the local insurance and risk management industry on bringing their risk management practices into the data protection sphere. Notable was a keynote speech by the CEO & President of IAPP, J. Trevor Hughes, CIPP on the historical regulation of new technologies in response to privacy and risk considerations through the ages.

“In 2024, the IAPP Bermuda KnowledgeNet Chapter held 2 educational sessions: Happy Privacy Week: Keeping your Sanity as a Bermuda Privacy Pro in 2024 with Ligaya Sanchez-Wilson, CIPM in January, and Why and How to Adopt an AI Governance Program with Eduardo Ustaran, Global co-head of the Hogan Lovells Privacy and Cybersecurity practice, AIGP, CIPP/E in June.

“The event celebrated the beginning of a new era for Bermuda informational privacy rights as well as the advancement of the global IAPP mission to support professionals involved in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. Notably, IAPP has now launched a Cybersecurity Law Center to support the complex field of cybersecurity law and policy, which is becoming a distinct discipline from privacy and is integral to organisations’ legal compliance, data governance and risk mitigation strategies.

“The in-person social also provided an opportunity for attendees to meet Bermuda’s Privacy Commissioner and his team as well as the IAPP Bermuda KnowledgeNet Chapter Co-Chairs.

“The 2025 IAPP Bermuda KnowledgeNet Chapter Co-Chairs are:

  • Co-Chair Nancy Volesky, Privacy Ambassador [Bermuda], Privacy and Cybersecurity Consultant;
  • Co-Chair, Gretchen Tucker, Privacy Ambassador [Bermuda], Chief Risk Officer and Head of Regulatory & Governance; and
  • Young Privacy Professional, Lovette Tannock, Parliamentary Counsel, Attorney-General’s Chambers [now a 2025 Co-Chair].
