Jamai Gomes Named Govt Employee Of Year

The annual Public Service Excellence Awards [PSEA] year-end event was held, with Jamai Gomes being named the Government of Bermuda’s 2024 Employee of the Year.

During the event, Head of the Public Service Cherie Whitter said, “Public officers are the backbone of our communities, working tirelessly to ensure our safety, health, and well-being. These dedicated individuals often go above and beyond their call of duty, facing challenging and sometimes dangerous situations with unwavering commitment. And by recognizing and honoring their contributions, we not only show our gratitude but also inspire a sense of pride and motivation among these officers.”

A Government spokesperson said, “And in grand celebration the event culminated with the recognition of the dedication and outstanding service of Mr. Jamai Gomes, an Electrical Engineering Technician from the Department of Works & Engineering, who was named the Government of Bermuda’s 2024 Employee of the Year.

“Hosted on January 16th by Premier David Burt and Head of the Public Service Cherie Whitter, the event gathered public officers from across the service, fostering a spirit of unity, collaboration, and pride.

“The Public Service Excellence Award programme, established in 2021, aims to recognize outstanding individuals and groups within the Public Service who have made significant achievements in service delivery. Throughout 2024, over 200 public officers were nominated for the PSEA, with 12 individuals and teams earning Public Service Excellence Awards during the year.

“The 2024 year-end honours singled out seven outstanding public officers, with Mr. Gomes being distinguished as the Employee of the Year for his exceptional leadership during Hurricane Ernesto.”

Ms. Whitter said, “Mr. Gomes went above and beyond in his duties and was deserving of this end of year award. We look forward to supporting his continued growth and development in the public service. I want to extend my appreciation to all of those who were nominated throughout 2024 for the Public Service Excellence Awards. I extend my congratulations to all nominees and look forward to continued excellence in 2025.”

Mr. Gomes said, “This recognition is a great honour. I thank God for this opportunity. My colleagues and I strive to serve the community to the best of our abilities, and I am deeply grateful for this acknowledgment.”

Premier Burt said, “We came together to celebrate the excellence, dedication, and resilience of Bermuda’s public officers. The PSEA End of Year event is about more than recognising individual achievements—it is about honouring the collective efforts of all who work on behalf of our island and the people of Bermuda every day.

“Mr. Gomes’ efforts were celebrated because of his actions during Hurricane Ernesto. It was a further example of the dedicated officers that Bermuda has in its public service. We thank him for his commitment to the safety and protection of our citizens, our services, and our infrastructure.”

This event was a testament to the commitment of Bermuda’s public officers and their invaluable contributions to enhancing the lives of the people of Bermuda.”
