TCD Changes ‘Aimed At Simplifying Procedures’

January 24, 2025 | 22 Comments

The Bermuda Transport Control Department [TCD], is “introducing changes to vehicle inspection processes aimed at simplifying procedures and focusing exclusively on safety. ”

A Government spokesperson said, “These updates will make it easier for vehicle owners to meet inspection requirements while maintaining the highest safety standards on Bermuda’s roads. The focus will shift away from cosmetic inspections, prioritizing the safety of the vehicle instead. Cosmetic issues that do not result in safety concerns will not result in a failed examination.”

Minister of Transport Wayne Furbert stated, “For years, vehicle inspections included not only safety checks but also an emphasis on cosmetic aspects such as spotless exteriors, dent-free panels, and pristine paintwork. Vehicle owners often have to invest significant time and money preparing their vehicles for inspection, which can be stressful and expensive.

“While we have made significant progress over the years, we recognize that there is still room to further streamline our services and reduce unnecessary red tape. By shifting our focus solely to safety requirements, we are making the inspection process more straightforward for vehicle owners. Additionally, these changes will reduce financial burdens on vehicle owners, particularly during this current economic climate. The changes reflect the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to modernizing services and enhancing the overall customer experience.”

“these changes will reduce financial burdens on vehicle owners, particularly during this current economic climate”

What are you talking about, Wayne? The PLP Government has managed to reduce retail price inflation below that of the U.S., U.K. and Canada. Bermuda must be the economic envy of the world!

    • I agree with Joe on this one says:

We are going to regret it. Our standards are now as low as our pants around our ankles. With big banners everywhere the PLP are trashing the island.

    • PAC MAN says:

PUTTY AND PAINT HIDE MANY A COMPLAINT.

I can not help thinking the this T.C.D bonanza is part of an election money ploy which has always been their game.

i have alway known the minister of T.C.D. to be a mathematical genius, he know how to slice bread and count marbles , the man is brilliant .

The Minister of transport will reduce the vehicles inspection procedure a savings for them on time and effort, there is some hair splitting going on there . .

By -the – way they never lifted any of my cars in the past for a closer inspection by-the- a non Govermnment employee ..

Also included in their bonus , is the elimination of body an painting cost to the public, what if we do our own work ? that is debatable ,on what car a person purchases, how the vehicle is maintained if garaged .

Usually car rust from the inside to outside and where in Bermuda you live and a bunch of other stuff many people just dispose of the car to the dump. following a minor failure

However, you may noticed that there is no mention of a reduction in the T.C.D inspection costs, the T.C.D. will still get is pound of flesh, as there is no public savings there .

So ! as general practice the Bermuda public take very good good care of their cars , if work is need to be done on painting and body work the majority of the public do it , or pay the price for neglagence.

The T.C.D. cost for vehicle inspection has not changed relative to the reduction of their service, that cost is built into the cost to acquire licence the vehicle included in the T.C.D. fee. and fix the roads.

i have had to pay for stearing problem on my last car
i have had 21 years out on one of my car not so any more.

There is no reduction on car import duty as the TCD licence is a double dip.
That keeps many of us poor and penny less.
I have the feeling that the wool is being pulled over our eyes as always.

The current Minister of Transport is Wayne Furbert

  2. We are admired for how beautiful says:

We keep the island.. thank God for KBB ,schools companies etc who pick up after countless who don’t care and if you studied them they are determined to ruin Bermuda. Now the outgoing PLP who have allowed dark tinted car windows and promotional banners all over the place loud bikes and more, will see a decline in how cars are passed and before you know it we will not be highly thought of and be a DUMP.Like poor Bermua standards of service we now have on retail and restaurants, Bermuda will die and once again we will sing our national song…How did it get like this. We will reap what we sow. And those MPs who are leaving will smile and accept no responsibility as we sit as spectators watching our island go to the dogs. Our second song will follow: I Told You So.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

“How did it get like this”

The majority of Bermudians voted for it. The PLP Government hates everything British and wants us to be more like America. The PLP Government told us so as long ago as 2004.

The current state of affairs should not come as a surprise to any Bermudian.

  3. Pot Hole says:

Your vehicle has to be in perfect shape while the roads are trash. Oh the irony of it all!

  4. Kim Smith says:

When I had my vehicle inspected in October 2024 there were no checks whatsoever: not the brakes, not the lights, not the indicators, not the under-carriage, not the wind-screen wipers, not the emissions. So much for a new focus on safety!

I did contact TCD and was told that they were waiting for some special equipment. I would like to hear from anyone who has has a more current test to find out whether their experience was any different than mine. The BEST office telephone number is 292-3782.

Of great concern as well is what sounds like an abandonment of testing emissions. Part of this concern is because Belco blames high emissions on the increasing number of vehicles in Bermuda’s. That would suggest we do NOT abandon testing emissions which would fly in the face of Belco’s assertions.

    Come on Bermuda!

    • Come on says:

      I support your comments.

      • PAC MAN says:

        KIM SMITH
The T.C.D. inspectiom play a small part in the inspection process as i make absolute sure may car is with out fault prior to their inspection.
never the less this can co wrong before seconds and after the examination.
i wonder how many peopl do a walk about the car st see if their car has a problem

        Lot me stop here .

Always before you drive alway conduct a full safety in inspection this can be done in less that a minute

        TURN SIGNALS & HORN.

Here is the” WHAT IF” a small child gets away from its mother and you car has a fault you will never see another day of pease for the rest of you life if as a result of a fatal accident. the mother will hear the horn and see the turn signals
an hopefully rescue her child .

Every time you change direction either in or out of the City in you car you must always with out fail use your turn signals / hand signals , failure to do so there will be certain consequences.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Kim, are you suggesting that the millions of dollars our Government spent on the emissions testing facility at TCD has been wasted?

      • Kim Smith says:

I am not sure if that is a loaded question (oftentimes these days it’s difficult to tell) but I wonder whether this new focus on safety will take the eye off the emissions and the impact of emissions levels that exceed acceptable levels.

      • Micro says:

Oh completely. There was never any standard for limiting emissions or a set pass/fail mark. If there wasn’t black smoke, your vehicle passed, no matter how many invisible toxic gasses were being emitted.

    • PAC MAN says:

SMOKE GET IN YOUR EYES.~~~~~~~~~~ you know the song !

      Got the it !
Go to Gibbs Hill light House stop at the Queens view on St Annes road say two hours before sun set look towards BELCo you will on a calm day black smoke coming from the chimneys
the function of the chimney can distribute smoke over greater distance . However with a S.W. breeze towards Government house .

To day exhaust pipes under cars are fitted with a converter. Stop playing the blame game on cars .

  5. Triangle Drifter says:

Oh boy! More good news just before an election. That dent in the door won’t matter anymore. The rust spots here and there won’t matter anymore. The faded paint or paint not matching perfectly won’t matter anymore.

Great! Now how about enforcement of what does matter such as enforcement of noise laws on bikes. What is the point of it anyway. Noise does not increase HP by any real measure. Whatever happened to window tint limits darker than factory?

While TCD are making changes they might also take a look at the attitudes of a couple of their examiners. There are somee very good ones also, I might add.

    • sage says:

Why is tint illegal for most private vehicles in the first place when limos, work vehicles and those who enforce the law don’t have to abide by it? I see some little unmarked cop cars so dark, even the windscreen looks tinted.

  6. Confused says:

Another way to streamline the process is to have staff actually respond to emails and voicemails.

    Just saying!

  7. Gerald says:

Must be an election soon mmmmm

  8. PAC MAN says:

How can there be shortage of rentable housing when so many people have left Bermuda?

Part of the problem is that some tenants vacate a property after they trashed the accommodation
the land lords has no option or encouraged to re- rent to property .

The renter deposit is not enough to make the repairs.

As a general rule that many land lords can hope for is about half a years renting income being faced with land tax home insurance for at lease for FIRE that is a mandatory expence ,painting and cleaning empty water tank broken fittings and and more half a post roast chicken in the toilet even light bulbs missing. will always follow the end of a tenancy

BERMUDA GOVERMENT. the tennants are always constantly on the move.

High society people are not much better .

WHY DO YOU THINK THE HOUSING CORP WAS CREATED ?

Many hopeful politicians do not want do home visits to face the music so they canvas over the media

How can that be or , is it that bad to be wondering with loss of sleep, if the house was some day to go up in smoke.

    *****
RENTING IS A RISKY BUSINESS !

” Bermudana Beach could be a wreck in less than one year ” .

The tellant may leave the island a week before the tenancy ends .
Next month when no rent is no paid. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> stop dreaming .
you will wonder why, they will throw the keys
net income estimate on Bermudiana beach half a years rent incme if you / they are lucky .

*****. Tenants do not care .

BHC gets stuck with some of those no care tenants by having to make repairs, on land lord owned properties “rented through ” BHC repaired from our tax money to restore the units as originally seen in first class condition from the beginning .

To the end of the tenancy you do not ever want to see .

The rent agreement is a useless piece of paper till proven other wise .

  9. Ella says:

Well. This is wayyyy overdue. Ridiculous that you would fail my vehicle cuz i have a little dent in my fender

  10. Gary says:

It takes tcd less than ten minutes to ‘ check ‘ your vehicle in the uk its at least a hour ! And boy do they go through it !!,
