Column: Famous On Devonshire PLP & More
[Opinion column written by Christopher Famous]
Often, far too often politics can have people feeling dejected, and wondering if they should quit. Fortunately, at those times, one has a set of guiding principles to fall back on for support.
Some 60 odd years ago a few families set about doing something that had never been done before. Walking all around their parish knocking on doors, some friendly others not so friendly, listening to what was on the hearts and minds of hundreds of Bermudians.
They organised bake sales and potluck on a monthly basis in order to raise funds.
Door by door, neighborhood by neighborhood, they gained the trust of the people. Not by slick words but by their deeds and dedication. In effect, they built lifelong relationships with the people of the parish, being their voice in times of need.
That relationship of trust continued for decades.
So today, we salute those ladies, those cousins, those sisters, who were the foundation of Devonshire PLP.
Melvina Morton-Robinson, Ethelyn Famous-Godfrey, Burnell Henry, Rita Charles, Leonie Richards, Marie Richards, Ann Webb, Julia Famous, June Famous Millicent Famous-Brown, Lois Browne-Evans and many others who set the standard for what community and political representation must be.
They instilled those same values into others of our generation. So, we knew what to do when it was our time to take up the baton of representing the people.
Our Family legacy continues.
