Kaleidoscope Celebrates Bermudian Artists
Children at the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation got the opportunity to celebrate Black History Month inspired by local Bermudian artists.
A spokesperson said, “This February at Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation [Kaleidoscope] 57 children aged 4-13 years old got the opportunity to celebrate Black History Month inspired by local Bermudian artists!
“Four artists shared their process, inspirations, and artwork with our children.
“Jahbarri Wilson who is self taught, shared his insight of symbolism in his process and helped inspire unique painted t-shirts by each camper. Their use of color, skulls, footprints, and design was inspired by some of his previous organic work.
“Kayuntae Ming’s artwork of ‘Big Handed Bay Youts’, was recreated in a collage form by our campers. They were able to cut out hands and make a layered piece with unique textured backgrounds. She shared her style of imperfection and embracing difference. The students were encouraged to experiment with drawing themselves through drawing with closed/covered eyes.
“Shanna Hollis brought her graphic design and mural work into our classrooms. Students worked collaboratively on a large piece throughout the week as well as designing smaller individual works using their own names in Mural form, based on Shana’s Flora Duffy Mural.
“Nahshon Hollis inspired students with his hyper realistic paintings. He wowed the campers with his work on clouds and portraits. He worked one on one with some of our students to create some of their own realism watercolor paintings. Other campers took on his inspirations and made their own studies on clouds.
“Kaleidoscope is grateful for the island’s black Bermudian artists. Additionally, Kaleidoscope is extremely thankful for our four highlighted artists. These artists are inspiring a new generation of children, to share their story and embrace creativity. Three of these artists are Kaleidoscope teachers and are inspiring our students in our programs daily, and as the lovely Kayuntae would say, ‘That is beautiful’. And it really is!
“For those looking for a new way to connect with Bermudian artists, check out Kayuntae Ming [The Healer] and Jahbarri Wilson’s show at Three Acts Studio, starting this Saturday Night [March 1st].
“Kaleidoscope’s primary focus is empowering students from toddlers aged 18 months to adults through engaging art and garden programmes and has become a cornerstone for thousands seeking creative exploration and learning in a supportive environment.
