“The exhibition is a highlight of the academic year, showcasing the creativity, initiative, and independent inquiry of Somersfield’s M5 students as they present their projects. This year’s panelists, each bringing valuable expertise from various industries, will provide insightful feedback and engage with students as they discuss their work:

  • Jonathan Castro – Principal Architect at E Se Studios, with over a decade of experience in Bermuda, specialising in commercial renovations and historic preservation.
  • Jennifer L. Phillips – Executive Director of the Bermuda National Gallery, former Chair of the Bermuda Arts Council, and recipient of the King’s Certificate and Badge of Honour for services to the arts.
  • Johnny Roberts – Executive Chef at IRG, with 38 years of experience in the culinary industry, including ownership of the acclaimed Bolero restaurant.
  • John Russell – Junior Mechanical Engineer at Onsite Engineering Services and Somersfield alumnus, with expertise in infrastructure, tourism development, and building design.
  • Trevor Rawson – Captain of the Bermuda Zoological Society’s Callista and Project Coordinator for the “BZS Living Classroom” on Trunk Island.

“As the only school in Bermuda offering the International Baccalaureate [IB] Middle Years Programme [MYP], Somersfield Academy’s M5 Personal Project marks the pinnacle of a student’s journey through the MYP. It encourages students to explore a personal interest, conduct independent research, and create a meaningful final product. The exhibition not only provides a platform for students to showcase their work but also offers a valuable opportunity to receive constructive feedback from professionals.”

Julie Yoon, Personal Project Coordinator, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Personal Project Exhibition is special in so many ways. It is a room full of passion. It is the testament of our school’s vision of raising socially conscious, independent thinkers. It is the celebration of everyone’s hard work – the students, their supervisors, their community coaches, and their families – that went into this in the last eight months. I congratulate our twenty-five students for finally completing their Personal Project journey, and I hope they get to enjoy and appreciate the growth and learning that came with it.”

The spokesperson said, “The exhibition will also serve as an open house for prospective students and families interested in learning more about Somersfield Academy’s distinctive approach to education. An information session will take place beforehand from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the Diploma Programme building, offering families the chance to explore Somersfield’s unique IB Programme continuum before attending the exhibition.
