‘Appreciation Celebration’ On March 20th
The community is invited to an Appreciation Celebration on March 20th, marking Dr. E.F. Gordon’s 130th birthday and honoring those who sustained the 1940s Intersectional Transformative Movement.
A spokesperson said, “The Community is Invited – on the 130th birthday of Dr E.F. Gordon – to join in the Appreciation Celebration of the many who sustained the 1940’s Intersectional Transformative Movement.
“The Island community is invited – on Thursday, March 20th – to join in the Appreciation Celebration for those hundreds of residents who sustained the Intersectional Transformative Movement which emerged in 1944. March 20, 2025 marks the 130th birthday of E.F. Gordon, who played a key role in that Movement, with the invaluable collaboration of scores of others: notably Alice Scott, Austin Wilson, Eustace Cann, Gerald Brangman & Gladys Missick-Morrell.
“This Movement provided the foundation for the transformation which moved Bermuda from the gloom of the first half of the 20th Century to a much brighter and democratic society; circumstances which are too easily taken for granted. Appreciation is both personally and communally restorative; so very appropriate given that March 20th is also the first day of Spring.
“This innovative celebration will include a ‘walk thru history’ which will begin at the campus of the Bermuda National Library, at the intersection of Queen & Reid St. at 12.15 pm on Thursday, March 20th [Rain Date 21/3/25].
“From there the walk will proceed to the intersection of Queen & Church St by 12.25 and then on to the intersection of Church & Court St by 12. 35 pm. Moving to the intersection of Court & Victoria St by 12. 50 pm, the walk will proceed via Victoria St. around to the BIU at 1 pm for some reflection and joyful sharing for 20 – 30 mins.
“Both, those able to join, as well as those unable to do so; are invited to share the spirit of the occasion on that date. This would be done to exemplify appreciation for ‘those on whose shoulders we stand’ – on both an Island-wide basis as well as a personal level. One way could include wearing an item of clothing emblematic of a fore-parent/mentor; sharing with others a small picture or memorabilia; or other means to express Appreciation.
“This Appreciation Celebration is a collaboration which includes the Department of Culture, Imagine Bermuda the Department of Libraries & Archives and the Bermuda Industrial Union.”
