“Come out and enjoy free lionfish chowder tasting and help decide which local chef will be crowned the next Lionfish Chowder Champion at this popular event, now in its third year. From 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., each chef will showcase their unique style and flavour, offering their own twist on this iconic dish.
“After the tasting, at 3:00 p.m. a panel of judges will select the winning chef, and attendee votes will be tallied to decide the People’s Choice Award. The prize presentation will take place from 4:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m.
“Lionfish are an invasive species in the Atlantic Ocean and have been in Bermuda waters for over two decades. They are aggressive predators, consuming 70 types of fish and crustaceans.
“They lack natural predators and their rapid reproduction threatens reef ecosystems. Lionfish are venomous and not poisonous, meaning that the toxins are only present on some of their spines, but thankfully their meat is delicious.
“Eat ‘Em to Beat ‘Em” events aim to promote lionfish as a delicious fish to boost demand. Local licensed cullers play a key role in reducing lionfish numbers and supplying them to supermarkets and restaurants.
“Events like this help to keep their numbers under control, so come out on the day and take action to help keep against this invasive species.”
