Krista Dyer is setting her sights on a podium finish as she prepares to face some of the world’s top athletes at the Sanda World Cup in Jiangyin, China.
Competing in the women’s 65kg division, Dyer heads into the prestigious biennial event in peak form, fresh off a dominant performance at the recent Phoenix Wushu Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona, where she secured a gold medal and celebrated her first technical knockout victory.
The Bermuda Sanshou Association [BSA] captain earned her place at the World Cup after an impressive silver-medal finish at the World Wushu Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, in November 2023.
Dyer, accompanied by head coach Garon Wilkinson and manager and coach Nolette Webb, is set to depart for China on Wednesday [April 2]. The competition will take place from Saturday through next Thursday.
Wilkinson, who also serves as BSA president, praised Dyer’s dedication and preparation leading up to the tournament.
“Krista is in the best shape of her life,” Wilkinson told Bernews. “It’s been more than ten years since Bermuda participated in the World Cup, and Krista fully deserves her opportunity.
“She’s in a really good position to do well. We’ve closed, in my opinion, a lot of holes in her game.
“My expectations are for her to do her best. There’s no position on the podium out of her reach.
“The registered athletes in Krista’s category include competitors from Australia, Romania, and Iran, which boasts the top Wushu Sanda team in the world.
“I consider Iran as her biggest challenge, but we’re certainly up for it.”
Dyer’s schedule remains packed following the World Cup, as she is set to compete at the World Games in Chengdu, China, in August and the World Wushu Championships in Brasilia, Brazil, in September.
