Philharmonic Society Concert Set For March 16
The Bermuda Philharmonic Society will hold a concert on Sunday, March 16, titled ‘Youth Springs Eternal,’ under the direction of conductor Kate Kayaian.
A spokesperson said, “ As the organization continues to grow in both talent and audience, this event promises to be a spectacular showcase of the island’s finest musicians and emerging stars.
“Last season was a milestone year for the Bermuda Philharmonic Society, marked by major achievements, including a record number of concerts, expanded musician participation, and growing community engagement. Since the 2022-2023 Season, the Society has hosted three full-orchestra concerts, two chamber music fundraisers, and the first annual Student Concerto and Composition Competition. With each performance, the Philharmonic continues to solidify its presence in Bermuda’s musical landscape.
“The March 16th concert, titled ‘Youth Springs Eternal’, will feature an impressive lineup of 50 musicians, including talented students, local professionals, and dedicated adult amateurs. The concert celebrates Bermuda’s blossoming musical talent and provides an extraordinary platform for young musicians to perform alongside seasoned professionals.
“The Philharmonic’s commitment to fostering local talent has led to a notable increase in musician participation. Each concert has seen an expansion of the orchestra, with the most recent July 2024 performance featuring a record 55 musicians. While the need for overseas musicians has decreased, the Society continues to seek new players locally, with bassoon being a key instrumental gap.
“Beyond the stage, the Philharmonic’s audience has also grown significantly. Ticket sales have consistently surpassed previous seasons, with the July 2024 ‘Best of Broadway’ concert attracting the largest crowd since the 1990s. Encouraged by this response, the Society has introduced two-performance weekends for select concerts, offering more opportunities for audiences to experience world-class music in Bermuda.
“Supporting the next generation of musicians The Bermuda Philharmonic Society remains deeply committed to nurturing young musicians. This past season, the Society awarded $13,500 in scholarships and bursaries to support a record 29 students and hosted the 2nd annual Young Artists Concerto and Composition Competition. This year’s first prize winner in the Concerto Category was 14-year-old viola player Prince Domingo, who will be featured as soloist on March 16th in the Hoffmeister Viola Concerto. The Philharmonic aims to increase total bursary awards to $15,000 this season which would mark the third consecutive year of increased scholarships.
“As the March 16th concert approaches, the Bermuda Philharmonic Society invites music lovers to experience an evening of breathtaking performances, showcasing both established and emerging talent. The concert will be held at St. John Church at 5pm featuring soloist Prince Domingo, and works by Brahms, Ravel, Humperdinck and more. Student and senior tickets are available for $35 with adult tickets available for $65. All tickets can be purchased at www.bermudaphilharmonic.org.
“Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of Bermuda’s vibrant and evolving music scene!”
