Lindo’s Race To Help Diabetes Awareness
[Written by Stephen Wright]
The annual Lindo’s to Lindo’s Road Race returns on Sunday [March 9], once again raising awareness about diabetes and supporting the Bermuda Diabetes Association.
The event includes a 10k run, a four-mile competitive walk, and a four-mile fun run/walk.
Participants will start at Lindo’s Family Foods in Warwick and make their way to the finish line at Lindo’s Market in Devonshire.
A portion of the proceeds will go toward funding the BDA’s educational initiatives, furthering its mission to support those living with diabetes on the island.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in multiple categories: Overall, Junior [12-19]. Open [20-39], Masters [40-49], Senior Master [50-59], Veteran [60-69], Experienced Veteran [70-plus], and Competitive Walker.
For the first time, School Participation Awards will be introduced, with $1,000 awarded to the primary and middle/high schools with the highest number of student participants.
Now in its 26th year, the partnership between Lindo’s and the BDA continues to make a meaningful impact.
Sara Bosch de Noya, the diabetes educator at the BDA, highlighted the importance of the funds raised over the years, which have allowed the association to offer its free programmes.
“We have a programme providing free medication and blood glucose monitoring supplies for those with diabetes who can’t afford their medications,” Ms. Bosch de Noya told Bernews.
“When a group like Lindo’s come behind us, championing the importance of healthy lifestyles – living well, physical activity – well, it can only help our job.
“We can’t tackle this issue alone and the support we’ve had from Lindo’s over the years strengthens and amplifies our message. It’s the perfect partnership.”

Ms Bosch de Noya also emphasised the benefits of exercise for those with diabetes, stating that the four-mile fun run/walk is an excellent way for individuals to become more active and embrace healthier lifestyles.
“There are so many exercise benefits for people with diabetes,” she said.
“Physical activity is so important. Glucose is the fuel we burn when our bodies exercise – mowing the lawn, paddleboarding, cycling, swimming, etc – that’s the energy substrate we use.
“Exercise can help reduce glucose levels and help people with diabetes feel well. Plus, who doesn’t feel better after a walk on the beach or railway trails?
“It’s physical health, mental health, wellness and wellbeing. Regular exercise is key. The four-mile walk is challenging, but doable.”
She added: “The slogan on our T-shirts is, ‘These feet are made for walking!’ Our bodies are designed to be active.”
Zach Moniz, Lindo’s manager, expressed his hope for another strong turnout around the 1,300 mark.
“You have the running side event, which is often used as a barometer for those training for May 24,” he said. “The walking event is a complement to what was already there.
“It’s been a terrific partnership between us and the Bermuda Diabetes Association.”
Participants can collect their race numbers from The Jack King building in the Botanical Gardens tomorrow from 8.30am to noon.
