Big Sounds To Be Showcased At Catch A Fire
[Written by Patrick Bean]
A staple among the local entertainment calendar since 2018, the popular Catch A Fire concert will once again feature a top-class array of musical acts to satiate the palate, with acclaimed dancehall reggae artist Busy Signal as its main feature.
Created as a platform to showcase sound systems, this year’s event remains rooted in its origins, with Fire Blacks, OGS Genesis and Young Gunz Sound set to play at the National Sports Centre on May 31.
Despite being the youngest of the trio and well-versed in delivering the best of modern dancehall music, Fire Blacks possesses an ‘old soul’, demonstrated by its ability to attract reggae lovers, young and old, to its frequent ‘pop-up’ shows.
The sound, which carries the same name as its owner, has shown itself as a force both locally and internationally.
“Fire Blacks is a sound designed for the people,” said Fire Blacks. “We thrive on diversity. We have a core young fan base, but we also have a mature following.
“To tell a secret that many people don’t know about us is that even though we are a young sound, we prefer old school, that’s our speciality.
“Personality wise, we are very humble and cool … all of that good stuff. We are not boastful, but just want to give good vibes to the people.
“We travel a lot. We have travelled to Jamaica twice, to Canada twice, and we’ve been to the US once. We have two dates in Jamaica coming up in August and a few other dates coming up overseas, so we are an international sound.”
Fire Blacks expressed excitement ahead of the duo’s upcoming performance at Catch A Fire.
“It’s a good platform for us to show our talent, and we give thanks to them for reaching out to us,” said Fire Blacks. “We don’t want to foretell the outcome. We know that we’re going to deliver properly, so we just focus on putting forward our best.”
Contrasting the relative youthfulness of Fire Blacks is OGS Genesis, a veteran sound with more than three decades in the music business.
Rich Kid, the leader of the sound, was unabashed when asked to describe his organisation’s status.
“We’ve been performing since 1989-90,” said Rich Kid, inferring that such longevity speaks volumes. “My Sound is the best on the Island, our work speaks for itself.
“We’ve clashed with many of the big sounds and had success. We’ve played against Stone Love, Mighty Crown and Bass Odessy, to name a few.
“We perform at home and abroad, so we’re truly international.”
Meanwhile, the third sound system on the card is Young Gunz Sound, which is headed by DJ Scoobay.
Catch A Fire takes place on May 31, 2025 at NSC North Field. Advance tickets are priced at $85 – $100 at the gate – and can be purchased via PTIX www.ptix.bm.
