Government Consultation On Banners And Signs

July 16, 2025 | 8 Comments

“The Ministry for the Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation is “inviting the public to take part in an important online consultation aimed at modernising Bermuda’s laws around banners, posters, and roadside signs.”

A Government spokesperson said, “This follows a ministerial statement delivered by the Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP in the House of Assembly on 11 July, in which he acknowledged the growing public concern over the unregulated spread of outdoor signs and advertisements.

“In that statement, Minister Rabain announced the Government’s intention to update Bermuda’s signage legislation for the first time in over 30 years.”

“As a Government, we recognise the need to strike a balance between supporting cultural and commercial activities and preserving the appearance and safety of our public spaces,” said Minister Rabain.

“We have heard the feedback from residents and businesses, and it is clear that the current rules are no longer fit for purpose.”

A Government spokesperson added, “Residents are now being asked to share their views through a short online survey and discussion forum available at https://forum.gov.bm/en/projects/banners-and-signage. The consultation is open until Monday, 11 August.”

“This is an opportunity for everyone—residents, business owners, event organisers and concerned citizens—to help shape how our island manages,” said Minister Rabain.

“Whether you have concerns, suggestions, or practical experience to share, we want to hear from you. I encourage all who are interested to visit the forum site and take part in the process.”

A Government spokesperson added, “The initiative forms part of a wider effort to ensure that any future legislation is clear, fair, and enforceable. In addition to the public consultation, the Ministry will continue targeted stakeholder engagement and analysis of current signage practices across the island.”

“modernising Bermuda’s laws around banners, posters, and roadside signs”

I guess Bermuda will soon be covered in American style neon signs. What a shame. Our culture is being destroyed.

Laws are already on the books dealing with signage.

    ENFORCE THEM.

This is a waste of government’s time. Someone with money must have complained for this to be made a bill. SMH!

Well I think they’re awful and tacky and I don’t have money. Are you trying to insinuate something ?

  4. Mark says:

Remove them immediately! They should not be allowed to do what they are doing!

I don’t like the huge signs either. Also, they are up for months and months before the event occurs. What if signs can only be posted for a defined period of time, they had a maximum size limit and there are only a few areas (no more than 5) where the banners can be posted. At the moment, they are popping up everywhere and they are getting bigger and bigger. Regarding all those signs along East Broadway and on roundabouts where you have to read each one to see what is being advertised. Get rid of those. That is as bad as looking at your phone when driving – a huge distraction. The signs and banners are not just unsightly, they are also a road safety issue.

What about the signs in bus shelters advertising a multi-national restaurant chain knows for its fried food?
