Sean Trott says he is heading to the International Island Games with a renewed sense of confidence after finally winning by winning the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby.

Trott delivered a commanding performance to claim his first May 24 title this year – a breakthrough victory that brought immense relief after four previous runner-up finishes.

He will compete in the 10,000 and half-marathon at the Games in Orkney – an archipelago off the north coast of Scotland – which begin on Saturday [June 12].

“[Winning May 24] is definitely a monkey off my back – it’s something I’d thought about for a long time,” Trott told Bernews.

“The level of support from the community has been phenomenal – the amount of people honking horns and calling out. There’s been a huge outpouring of support.

“Now that objective has been achieved, I can broaden my horizons a bit.”

The 35-year-old aims to add to the three bronze medals he won at the 2011 Isle of Wight Games in the 10,000, half-marathon, and half-marathon team event.

Ever the student of the sport, Trott has been studying his competition in detail – analysing his competitors’ performances to set clear targets.

“My confidence is high, and I know I can push a bit harder and maybe win a medal or two,” he said.

“I’ll probably prioritise the half-marathon. That’s not to say I won’t be giving it my all in the 10,000!

“I’ve researched my competitors and checked their times this year compared to their times at previous games.

“I’ve a range of times that I need to run to medal – I think I’m capable of that.

“The level of the competition has improved, so you have to come improving.”

Joining Trott in Bermuda’s athletics team in Orkney will be Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby women’s winner Gayle Lindsay along with Jake Brislane, Tony Bean and Philip Woolins.

“Representing Bermuda is not something you get to do all of time,” he added. “It’s an extra special opportunity.”
