St. George’s Celebrates Cup Match & Heritage
The Corporation of St. George’s July newsletter, themed “Celebration,” invites the public to enjoy a vibrant mix of events, heritage tributes, and community pride as Cup Match returns to the historic town.
A spokesperson said, “The Corporation of St. George’s proudly presents its July Newsletter under the theme “Celebration,” inviting both residents and visitors to experience a vibrant lineup of events, historical commemorations, and community activities that define our UNESCO World Heritage town.”
Town Manager Candy-Lee Foggo shares her excitement, “We’re thrilled to welcome Cup Match back to St. George’s on July 31st. We look forward to welcoming the wider community to St. George’s over the Cup Match period.
“As part of the festivities, the town will host its annual Cup Match Extravaganza on Friday, July 18th at 6:30 PM in King’s Square. This free celebration marks 191 years of Emancipation and 25 years of UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. Highlights include live steel pan music, the Battle for the Extravaganza Trophy, community trivia, and performances by the beloved St. George’s Dancerettes—an evening that blends heritage, celebration, and community pride.
“Flag Invasion will take place on Sunday, July 27th at Fort St. Catherine, one of the crown jewels of our UNESCO World Heritage Site. and Soca versus Reggae at Tiger Bay on August 1st. These events bring life and energy to the town, and for Cup Match fans, the venue is especially convenient—just a short walk or drive from the St. George’s Cricket Club.”
The spokesperson said, “Our General Council Meeting will take place on Thursday, July 24th at 6:00 PM in Towne Hall. Residents are encouraged to attend and take part in shaping the future of our town through public discussion of ongoing projects and initiatives.
“This month’s newsletter also features inspiring stories from the heart of St. George’s. We spotlight Pedego Electric Bikes Bermuda at Hunter’s Wharf, where owner Daley Furbert honors her late brother’s legacy by offering guided bike tours that celebrate our town’s rich history. Readers will also meet Town Councillor Dr. Amne Osseyran, whose remarkable journey from local student to internationally recognized physician and forensic expert reflects the extraordinary potential nurtured within our community.
“As the birthplace of Cup Match in 1901, St. George’s continues to write new chapters in the story of Bermudian tradition and celebration. Whether you’re cheering at cricket matches, strolling our historic streets, or simply enjoying the spirit that defines us, we invite you to be part of our story this July. Come celebrate with us!
