‘Thoughts Become Things’ To Screen At BUEI
After global success at 17 film festivals, Bermudian short ‘Thoughts Become Things’ will host its final local screening at BUEI on July 17 ahead of its digital release.
A spokesperson said, “After earning global recognition across 17 international film festivals in 11 countries, the Bermudian short film Thoughts Become Things will return home to Bermuda for its final public screening and a special premiere event on Thursday, July 17th at 5:30 PM.
“Hosted in partnership with the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI], this screening marks a significant moment for the filmmakers and the Bermudian community, as the project prepares for its digital debut in August on YouTube.
“The six-minute film, which follows a young Bermudian Gombey on a dreamlike journey to connect with his ancestors, has been celebrated for its deeply poetic storytelling and striking visuals.”
As producer Stephan Johnstone explains, Thoughts Become Things is much more than a film—it’s an ode to Bermuda’s culture and heritage. “The story is rooted in our traditions,” he said. “We wanted to capture the spirit of the Gombey in a way that felt authentic to Bermuda, but also resonated far beyond our shores. This final screening at BUEI is a full-circle moment for our team, and it gives us the space to reflect on what this project has achieved—not just for us, but for Bermuda on the world stage.”
The spokesperson said, “Since premiering, the short has won nine awards and been subtitled in Spanish, Portugese and Japanese, ensuring its cultural message reaches diverse audiences worldwide. The premiere event on Thursday, July 17 offers guests an exclusive glimpse into the film’s global journey and introduces fresh perspectives on how heritage can inspire modern storytelling.”

The spokesperson said, “The evening’s programme includes not only the final screening of Thoughts Become Things, but also the world premiere of Decoding Thoughts, a behind-the-scenes mini-documentary that explores the creative process and cultural significance of the film. Guests will then enjoy a cultural reception, complete with drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and a live performance inspired by a pivotal moment in the story—a unique, immersive experience designed to bridge the film’s narrative with real life.
