Young Coders Club Empowers Berkeley Students
The Berkeley Institute’s Young Coders and Engineers Club recently completed its third year, equipping students with real-world STEM skills in robotics, coding, and innovation through hands-on learning and industry partnerships.
A spokesperson said, “The 3rd cohort of The Berkeley Institute’s Young Coders and Engineers Club has wrapped up a transformative year, empowering students with hands-on experience in robotics, coding, and innovation. Supported by ARK Bermuda and facilitated in partnership with Connectech Coding, the program has given students a powerful introduction to 21st-century skills and the global world of STEM.
“Over the course of the school year, students in the club have engaged in a dynamic curriculum modeled after the FIRST Global Robotics Challenge, building foundational knowledge in engineering, programming, and collaborative problem-solving. The program is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, igniting a passion for technology among Bermuda’s youth.”
“This has been a remarkable experience for our students,” said Troy King, Club Leader and ITL for Mathematics at The Berkeley Institute. “Many of them had never touched a robot or written a line of code before. Now they’re not only doing both, but thriving at it. The confidence and creativity they’ve developed is inspiring.”
A spokesperson added, “The club also serves as a feeder program into the Bermuda National Robotics Team, providing students with a pathway to represent Bermuda on the international stage while addressing global challenges such as sustainability and climate action through technology.”
“Our focus is not just on building robots, but on building leaders and problem solvers,” said Sloane Johnson, Interim Executive Director of Connectech Coding, the non-profit organization that delivered the program. “Through opportunities like this, students are exposed to real-world STEM challenges and gain a sense of purpose that goes far beyond the classroom.”
A spokesperson added, “The success of the program would not have been possible without the generous support of ARK Bermuda, whose funding made the experience accessible to all participating students.”
“On behalf of Ark Bermuda, we’re proud to support The Berkeley Institute’s Young Coders and Engineers Program for a second consecutive year. We truly value the dedication of Mr. King and Ms. Johnson in fostering student engagement and growth. At Ark Bermuda, we remain committed to investing in the youth of Bermuda, particularly through education. The program not only helps students build strong technical foundations but also nurtures essential soft skills such as leadership and teamwork, qualities that will serve them well in any future endeavor. – Jordan Smith, Ark Bermuda Representative”
A spokesperson added, “The Young Coders and Engineers Club will continue in the upcoming school year, with plans to expand student engagement and deepen the focus on sustainability-driven technology education. Program organizers are currently seeking continued support to build on the momentum of this year’s success.
