Bermuda Squash Team Begins Pan Am Games

Bermudian squash players opened competition at the XXVI Pan American Squash Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with mixed results in the men’s and women’s singles divisions.

In the women’s main draw, Sydney Wallace advanced after defeating Trinidad’s Rhea Khan 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6. Abigail Brewer lost to Brazil’s Laura Silva 11-7, 11-2, 11-1, while in the parallel division Charlotte Toogood was beaten by Chile’s Antonia Vera 11-4, 11-3, 11-5.

On the men’s side, Noah Browne earned a straight-games win in the parallel division, defeating Luca Reich of the British Virgin Islands 11-6, 11-9, 11-3. In the main draw, Taylor Carrick fell to Nick Spizzirri of the United States 11-5, 11-6, 11-9, and Micah Franklin was defeated by Peru’s Rafael Galvez 11-6, 11-3, 11-8. Anaya Smith, competing in the parallel division, lost to Shawn Simpson of the Bahamas 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-3.
