BMA Warns Of Spoofed Email Scam

The Bermuda Monetary Authority [BMA] is warning of fraudulent emails from a spoofed @bma-bm.com address.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Monetary Authority [Authority] has been made aware of emails sent from a spoofed email account using the email domain @bma-bm.com, which were used to misdirect payments intended for the Authority from a regulated entity to an unrelated account in the name of ‘BMA Gulf’ in another jurisdiction. As part of the scheme, the fraudsters also created and provided false payment instructions to a regulated entity, which gave the appearance of having been issued by the Authority.

“The Authority wishes to remind regulated entities that it posts details regarding fees and payment instructions on its website [Fees of the Monetary Authority of Bermuda – BMA]. Any instruction to deliver funds to any other institution should be considered fraudulent.

“The Authority also reminds the public that emails from the Authority will always appear with the email domain @bma.bm and that recipients should verify the email address before acting on any content within the email.

“If you have any doubts about any communication received from the Authority, do not open any attachments and do not trust the contact information in the suspicious email. Instead, please call your representative on a number already known to you or call the Authority at our main number [441] 295-5278 and ask to be transferred to the sender so that you can verbally confirm the content. Should you have any queries regarding payments to the Authority, please e-mail finance- receivables@bma.bm.

“The Authority has taken action to have the fraudulent web domain suspended and, in the meantime, asks the public to be vigilant in reviewing emails that appear to come from the Authority to ensure they are genuine.

“The Authority maintains a warning list to inform the public and maximise the deterrent effect. The web domain has been added to the warning list of unauthorised entities, which can be found at www.bma.bm/warning-list.”
