The Mary Prince Women’s Entrepreneurial & Leadership Conference kicked off this week at Pier 6 with a pre-conference launch session on August 6th, unveiling Girls in Film, Technology, Entertainment, and Design [GIFTED], an initiative aimed at empowering Bermudian girls aged 13 to 17.
“GIFTED has achieved charitable status in Bermuda, marking a pivotal milestone in our mission,” said Dr. Dana Selassie, Founder and Director of Zhyon International and the Mary Prince Conference. “We launch this pioneering program with a half-day leadership intensive for girls aged 13–17.”
A spokesperson said, “The inaugural GIFTED session welcomed young women and their mentors for an inspiring morning designed to spark ambition and leadership potential. The highlight of the session was a keynote by internationally renowned business leader and conference headliner, Ibukun Awosika. As a global entrepreneur and advocate for women in leadership, Ms. Awosika shared her journey, challenges, and message of resilience with the young attendees.”
The Minister of Education Crystal Caesar offered remarks, emphasising the importance of mentorship, leadership, and providing platforms for young women to thrive. Minister Caesar said, “Through your camera lens, with technology and digital creativity, you hold the power to tell impactful stories that move us, to build connections that bind us and design ideas that inspire and shape us for generations to come.”
“I urge each of you to be fearless in the pursuit of your ideas. Do not be afraid to experiment, fail forward or ask questions that disrupt. This initiative, GIFTED, is more than an acronym. It’s a call to action. It’s a declaration that girls are not only gifted, but they are also ready. Ready to imagine. Ready to lead. Ready to shape the future of Bermuda and beyond.”
Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors Tinee Furbert attended the pre-conference event and also spoke at the conference on August 7th [today] encouraging attendees to lead with purpose, stating, “Mary Prince’s journey reminds us that leadership is not merely about position or title, it is about conviction, courage, and the willingness to stand for what is right, even when you stand alone. Mary’s example is a testament to the power of storytelling as an instrument of justice, a reminder that one voice, determined and unafraid, can influence history. Today, as we gather to focus on women’s entrepreneurial and leadership advancement, Mary’s legacy calls us to embrace our capacity for resilience and impact.”
A spokesperson added, “The conference, held August 7–8 at Pier 6, serves as a vital platform for women’s entrepreneurship and leadership, named in honour of the historic Bermudian freedom fighter and author, Mary Prince.”

Has the PLP done for the black men of the country. Tell us before I go to PATI and ask what this event cost and the long term plan to incorporate males.
Sorry but where is this event attributed to the PLP?
This seems like a private event. Government ministers being invited to speak does not equate to this being a government event.
What’s stopping you from putting together an event for males? Always complaining but never offering solutions. You want the world to cater to you.
In Mary Prince’s story, she speaks for everyone and not just women. This is a good initiative, but clearly not a good understanding of Mary Prince’s story, as she was the voice for the voiceless which includes all people!
You said the Mary Prince story included all people. Ha. No black male involvement. Where is it? Wiped out in this event and in addressing the problem. And all people would mean whites as well so you have a very shallow response lacking concern for black men, and all people including whites who were NOT included. Your response proved my point as you shot yourself in the foot with your own response.
Lol
No mate
If you read what was said by, “the voice of the voiceless” and received the message, it would be no need for you to make your comment the way you did.
Try using your logical mindset not so much your emotional mindset, it helps one’s understanding.
Peace and Blessings.
This was not an invite only event. This was not a government event either. The organizers did not have any control over who chose to attend and who chose nit to attend. Get of the males and no Caucasians scenario.
