Bermuda women’s footballer Leilanni Nesbeth has reflected on the hurdles she has overcome during her sporting journey during a recent interview.

The Chicago Red Stars midfielder was recently featured on the National Women’s Soccer League’s ION Features, where she spoke candidly about her dual passion for football and cricket, and the personal challenges that have shaped her career.

“Every part of my journey has had its own set of challenges, highs and lows, which moulded me into this person that I’m super proud of now,” said Nesbeth, 24, who joined the Red Stars at the start of last season.

She recalled her early sporting years, where her talents spanned across disciplines.

“I grew up playing a lot of sports – soccer, cricket,” she said. “I didn’t know which one I wanted to lean towards because I had so much love for them.

“Making the decision to choose soccer fit my personality a bit more as I was growing up and finding myself and my niche.”

Nesbeth, who lifted the NCAA Championship with Florida State University in 2023, also reflected on the profound influence of her mother, who passed away during her freshman year of college.

“What we shared was so unique and special,” she said.

“She was navigating her own struggles, but she still found a way to always put us first. That’s something I’ll take with me for the rest of my life.

“She’s been a monumental part of my career, personality, and growth.

“She’s the reason I wake up and do what I do. She gives me so much motivation, even now that she’s not here. I just want to make her proud, and I know she is.

“Hopefully, I was able to do that while she was here.”

She added: “I’ve got a lot of amazing people around me, who have made this journey so special. It’s also been me versus the world a lot of the time.

“The things I’ve been able to see, accomplish, and go through, I’m proud of myself for overcoming those obstacles, and still being able to come out with a smile on my face.”
