PLP ‘Acknowledge’ Robert King’s Election

September 7, 2025 | 20 Comments

The PLP said they “acknowledge” Robert King’s election as the “7th OBA leader in 8 years” and said his “loud, often error filled attacks, have become a hallmark of his short time in Parliament.”

This follows after the OBA Party Conference last night which saw Robert King defeat Ben Smith for the position as OBA leader, while Scott Pearman was elected as the OBA Deputy Leader, defeating Michael Fahy.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party acknowledges Mr. King’s election as the 7th OBA leader in 8 years.

“Bermudians will by now know MP King’s style well. His loud, often error filled attacks, have become a hallmark of his short time in Parliament.

“Like most Bermudians, we believe that Bermuda doesn’t need more shouting; we need steady leadership that protects Bermudian families, fights to drive down the cost of living and works for all Bermudians and not just an elite, privileged few.

“That is what the PLP is working to deliver and in the days and months ahead we will not be distracted by OBA attempts to divide, distort and distract.”

Whew! Not even 24 hours since King’s election and the PLP are on the attack.

Must be some fear in what is coming. If King is loud and often inaccurate, he is taking strategy right out of the PLP playbook. They won’t like that. They expect the OBA to play fair and always above board, not like some street gang

    • They said says:

We don’t need this type of response but here it is for all to see from the PLP.
Why not focus on the issues and state we look forward to developing an avenue for meaning change and prosperity by working together. Then get busy and improve Bermuda. Oh no… not that PLP bunch, same old verbage. Always attack, attack, attack.

“Why not focus on the issues”

What issues? Our nearly $4 BILLION in current account debt? Our billions more in unfunded pension liabilities? The fact that our Minister of Finance stopped paying into the sinking fund several years ago, so we will not be prepared to make payment on our loans when they fall due?

        • Joe says:

You keep putting your feet in your mouth. $4 BILLION IS ONE issue. You asked what issues? That’s one I’ll leave the other 20 in a brown bag on your wall.

            “$4 BILLION IS ONE issue.”

            1. Our nearly $4 BILLION in current account debt?

            2. Our billions more in unfunded pension liabilities?

            3. The fact that our Minister of Finance stopped paying into the sinking fund several years ago, so we will not be prepared to make payment on our loans when they fall due?

If you are going to appropriate my name, at least learn to count. Clearly you did not go to Whitney Institute.

“Not even 24 hours since King’s election and the PLP are on the attack.”

Many people believe that the best defence is a good offence.

      • Triangle Drifter says:

A simple show of decency and maturity might have been in order with a congratulations and well wishes along with maybe a weeks worth of grace period would be more in order.

But no, the PLP imediately launches into attack mode. They must really fear King. So they should. King has a good righthand man. He also has some strong people in the also ran group.

        • I agree with you says:

Triangle Drifter and we see the country doing the same daily..
. Attack traffic by speeding and not waiting
. Attacking each other etc etc
Cut from the same playbook. It needs to change like you said Triangle Drifter.

    • OBAertwist says:

Thanks you just handed PLP another sweet Victory with King in front lol

    • Still sayin says:

Was that spokesperson Jahmal Simmons? He who crossed the floor

  2. LOL says:

Who’s scared of King’s Loudmouth? Seriously, are you kidding me? Just wait he’s about to show us all how unqualified he really is in the coming year!

    • Truth says:

Bermudians love the unqualified…hence a quarter century of PLP incompetence and bigotry.

You’re on the wrong side of history, bigot.
Sit your low IQ, republican *** down.

    • WAIT FOR IT! says:

BINGO. It’s going to be funny when they lose the next election.

  3. What is it says:

Is the PLP concerned that he will keep them on their toes?
A nice complement. Why can’t the PLP just complement without the unnecessary vitriol. Who has a PROBLEM? Is the PLP afraid that he will expose their gross incompetence, divisiveness, poor fiscal history, etc has much to be accepted or admired, desired. Just because you have conned the Bermudians to vote for you does not mean are the best for the country.

  4. Watching says:

Can we have the vote counts ?

  5. Bert Robert says:

The PLP have easily won the last three elections against the OBA and will probably easily win the next three. They could have afforded to be a little bit gracious in their very first response to a new leader.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

But have they really won so easily? They have won because of the ‘first past the post’ Westminster system that we use.

A much fairer voting system would be a proportional voting system where the ratio of MPs would reflect the wishes of the voters. So long as the PLP continues to win, even with a minority of voters as last February, there is no chance of a fairer system even being considered.

      • Joe Bloggs says:

“there is no chance of a fairer system even being considered”

But the PLP Government keep telling us they are working for a fairer Bermuda!

      • Bert Robert says:

The PLP have won, in the last 3 elections, 58.9%, 62.1% and 49.6% of the vote, respectively. With only 36 seats in the Assembly, pretty much any electoral system would have given the PLP a majority victory.
