[Labour Day message from Bermuda Progressive Labour Party Chair Dawn Simmons]

Fellow Bermudians,

As a Labour Party, our first commitment is to the workers of our community. Every day we seek new ways to put more money in your pocket, bring down the cost of living and bring greater fairness to every person and place across our island.

Labour Day is a reminder to us, and to all, that the rights we enjoy at work, the laws that protect workers and ensure their pay were all fought did not come to us by chance. It came through decades of protest, agitation and organization to make something as simple as having a weekend off a reality.

This Labour Day  we remember the path it took to get us here and we look forward towards more progress, more rights and more protections for our workers.

Labour Day also calls us to keep building a fairer Bermuda. That means:

  • Protecting the dignity of work by introducing and on Sept 1st, raising the minimum wage.
  • Strengthening health care and retirement security so our seniors can live with comfort and respect.
  • Investing in skills, apprenticeships, and opportunities so our young people don’t have to give up their dreams
  • Supporting small businesses and the workers who power them.
  • Ensuring safe workplaces where every person is respected.

Our party’s values are simple, a fairer Bermuda for all of us.

We want each of us to be able to pursue our goals without barriers stacked against us.

We want each of us to have the opportunity to learn, earn, and build a future right here at home.

We want each of us to be secure in the belief that when you work hard you can take care for your family, retire with dignity, and weather life’s storms.

On this Labour Day, let us celebrate how far we’ve come and commit to the work ahead.

To every worker we commit to continue listening to you and fighting for you.
