Sean Trott has thrown down the gauntlet by challenging runners to stay ahead of him in a charity road race next month.

Trott, who won the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby in May, will give competitors a five-minute head start before setting off in pursuit at the Word of Life Bermuda 5K Run and Walk on October 11.

The charity, which is close to Trott’s heart, is a Christian mission organisation committed to helping youngsters and runs summer camps for 11 to 17-year-olds on Grace Island in the Great Sound.

“I wanted to use the publicity from my May 24 victory to help a charity in need,” Trott told Bernews.

“I put forward the idea [to the charity] and we decided to shoot for it.

“The director of the charity had the challenge idea – hopefully, that will make it a bit more fun.”

The race will start and finish at Astwood Park and include a one-mile kids’ race for those 12 and under.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three finishers in the 5K walk, 5K run, and age categories: juniors 19 and under; open 20–39; masters’ 40–49; seniors 50–59; veterans 60–69; and super veterans 70-plus.

“Word of Life Bermuda means a lot to me. The charity has helped me develop into the individual I am,” Trott said.

“They put on various clubs in churches and schools and give children and teenagers opportunities to learn about life principles from the bible and other places.

“They directly and indirectly come alongside families impacted by gun violence and road traffic fatalities in Bermuda, helping to provide them with hope and comfort.”

Trott, who represented Bermuda at the International Island Games in Orkney, Scotland, has previously run to support the Grace Island Project, helping raise funds to upgrade the island.

The charity gained ownership of Grace Island in 2018 and has developed it as a youth camp site.

“They hold summer camp for youngster aged middle schools and below and Middle School and above,” said Trott, who attended Word of Life camps on Grace Island as a youngster.

“They rent out the camps space for the rest of the year – it’s used for reaching young people.”

Entry for the 5K is $35. Butterfield & Vallis [Powerade] and the Lindo’s Group are sponsors of the event.
