City “Up And Running” Following Hurricanes

The City of Hamilton has “resumed normal operations” following the passage of Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda, with all city services “up and running.”

A spokesperson said, “The City of Hamilton has resumed normal operations following the passage of Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda. All City services, including trash collection and administrative offices, are up and running.

“City crews were deployed yesterday to assess infrastructure, clear debris, and begin a City-wide clean-up. Queen Elizabeth Park and Victoria Park are expected to reopen by the end of the day, while Fort Hamilton remains closed until further notice. All traffic lights are functioning, car parks are open, and public bathrooms have reopened, with the exception of the ladies’ restroom in Victoria Park, where minor roof damage is being repaired today.

“City CEO Dwayne Caines spoke with Fox Weather to share the City’s preparedness and recovery efforts in the wake of the storms yesterday.”

Mr. Caines said, “It seems like we have been experiencing significant weather events every year, so our City team begins preparations about a month in advance [of hurricane season],” Mr. Caines told Fox News. “We inspect and prune trees, secure infrastructure, and take all necessary safety precautions. Then we hunker down and, as they say, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

“This year, there was very little time between the two storm systems. I was out with our team at first light, walking through the City. There was a lot of leaf litter and some branches down, but overall, we were in good shape. Bermuda’s robust building codes mean we are well-prepared…Now we’re focused on returning to normal. The airport is open, most stores have reopened, and the City and national businesses will resume full operations tomorrow.”

The spokesperson said, “While the storms presented manageable challenges, they also underscored the strength of the City’s planning, the dedication of its teams, and the leadership that keeps Hamilton ready year after year. Bermuda’s approach to hurricane readiness is built on experience, coordination, and care, and the City is proud to play its part in keeping the island safe and moving forward.

“The City extends its thanks to City businesses and residents, most of whom complied with requests to place trash out only at designated collection times, refrain from putting waste out after collections, and bring bins indoors ahead of the storms. These efforts, combined with proactive work by City crews to clear storm drains, prune trees, and inspect infrastructure, helped reduce flooding risks and minimize damage.

“Residents can expect some remaining leaf fall and debris in the coming weeks.
